I agree with you that I don't think their sound is as unique as many other bands, but it's much more than plain alt rock. They combine pop, metal, trip-hop, psychedelica, electronic and lots of other genres all in one. So their sound is pretty "innovative" actually.

mmm... ok... I think ambience, psychodelic and space can be put in pop and metal, not that much, so I agree theyr'e like Alternative-rock-pop band... sorry but I don't hear much more... I don't say theyr'e bad, but I don't see them like something unique... don't you think is kind of a light tool...???
Change the program inside... Stay in silence is a crime.

And how the bloody has anyone NOT mentioned Neurosis yet? They are, alongside a few others maybe, THE most innovative band in metal, and I dare anyone to disagree with me.

These all came up with something rather unique, I think:

Non Credo
Secret Chiefs 3
Kayo Dot
Guapo
Ween
Boredoms
Radiohead
Tortoise
Faun Fables
Volapük
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me

No one dare insult the fathers of post-metal.

Never even heard 'em but it's clear they chose their name with considerable prescience. (You are what you eat etc)

They've knocked down more boundries than any other 90s metal band, that's for sure. You should check them out if you want to find something very dark and very original.

At least I don't worship John Lennon

You are right though, Neurosis are the devil.

I'd like to see Pain of Salvation somewhere in there. Of course, not much of what they do is totally original, but the funk-thrash-metal of Entropia and whatever you'd call BE are fairly original. Plus I'd personally give them props for attempting depth and unparalleled intimacy in their music, and mostly succeeding.
