Err, didn't know where else to put this. I know there is no account for taste, and you should rate albums however you like, but this still looks suspicious:

Good thing that ratings have weight just 1, reviews are 5 times stronger. Mighty (flexing, flexing)

It looks suspicious, agreed.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

To be fair, the last rated album (E-Re), has 13 5* and his 1* rating. However, if the album is really that good I don't know why someone would think it is only worth one star.

Note: I know that the ratings are partially due to some fanboyism, but still, after being rated so highly you would expect people to see something good in it.

If I were to take the music on its own I would give it a five (and for my enjoyment), but I could understand someone rating it lower because it's a) just not to their taste and b) it's rehashing music that's already been released.  Like many, I was familiar with the music from live performances, even if this is rather different, and it refers back to music released on much earlier albums.  It's not really innovative, but I love the execution and it does have good twists.  In some ways I could see Magma fanboys being harder on it.  I think it's a really lovely album, and has great groove.  A very accomplished, and well-nuanced production.  Some will complain it's too much more of the same old, same old.

In Nemec's case, I'm sure it's different.  He'd probably give every Magma album a one if he heard them.  Anyway, an unreliable rater -- one of those who would be prone to rate his favourite bands' albums all five and all ones that he isn't a fan of one.  It's interesting to see how he gave Selling England a one while the Genesis influneced band Marillion he gave all five ratings (though the Genesis influence is not strong in most of those I expect, especially the Hogarth era).  He can go against the grain if he likes by giving Hybris a one, Los Jaivas' album a one, and Trisector, and all those Pink Floyd albums a one, but I certainly wouldn't defer to his musical opinions. See his ratings:

No, serious problem with this guy. I checked out his only review: http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=184043

and directly to the left of it on the album page... http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=73525

That's direct plagiarism. He only wrote one review, and he didn't even write it at that.

Well-spotted, but he actually has two reviews and both are plagiarised.  His Misplaced Childhood review is plagiarised from a review by King By-Tor (look in body of the KBT review) as well as the Renaissance review he plagiarised from Joolz.

Ouch. I did just find out that Firefox's find function is useful in finding plagiarized reviews. I agree that his ratings are completely illogical, I was just mentioning the fact that E-Re's ratings are probably skewed anyway, but the plagiarized reviews, now that is on a whole different level. On the Renaissance review he gives it 5*, but the review he plagiarized gave it only two.

Loads of ratings appeared from one day to the next, instantly causing Magma to turn from 5.0 to 4.3 in a matter of one day (or two) and pushing Riverside/TRansatlantic up. Many many many 1-star ratings to Magma.

It is fishy.

Very, and the later 1 stars are all from new members created 1 after another (look their ID #)

I've also block the IP 212.14.2.178

I need to find a way to limit that...

Solutions :
- 1 rating by IP
-  Rating weights depends on nb. of ratings / joined date  ?

Thanks for sharing ideas

MAX

Cheers Guys, some pretty crude attmepts being made to spam the ratings. All the recent  IDs had the same IP address.

There may be some 5 star spamming going on too, but that is less evident.

Blocking multiple ratings fromt he same IP would help M@x. Some people vary their IP address to get round this though.

Could we make it that you cannot post ratings on the day you join. You have to wait say 3 days before posting ratings. Same with forum posts perhaps? It would cut the spamming a lot.

Here's what I do at PF:

I manually assign weights to all the users. If an account was created only to submit a couple of ratings and then never used again, I simply assign a low weight. If the user comes back after a while and becomes more active, I'll see it and will be able to adjust the rating again.

PA has much more users than PF, but I still think it can be done. All you need is a table where users are listed in chronological descending order, with a link to their profile and the weight number and a way for the admin to quickly edit it. You could also list the current number of ratings , min/max ratings and the mean deviation (function "stdev" in MS-SQL Server). Usually spammers can be recognized by submitting both 1-star and 5 star ratings combined with a high standard deviation.

I actually suggested that to someone once, except instead of posting it was thread making.

I wouldn't have a problem with throttling thread making and rating without a review for a few days, but weighting based on join date is a terrible idea. Making a review 5 times stronger than a rating is deterrent enough, there's no need to weaken a rating further by forcing you to have a lot of them. I wouldn't cry if new accounts weren't allowed to post at all the first few days, but it would be more fair and still effective to only limit them to existing threads and have to write a review for their ratings.

Another list manipulator (i think) as it one-stars both #1 and #2 2009 spots.

I think people who don't write reviews are more inclined to rate all the way one way or another, because they feel like their opinion weighs less. So if they want to feel like they made an impact on the rating, they use the full weight they can. Maybe our weakened rating-only weighting is prompting more list manipulators.
