I'm just curious... I've heard very little from this year, though I am eagerly anticipating Magma's new release. List as many as you like, and amend as new ones come along.

(n.b. not all of these are on PA)

1.  Cheer-Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune
2.  Led Bib - Sensible Shoes
3.  Flat Earth Society - Cheer Me, Perverts!
4.  Acoustic Ladyland - Living with a Tiger

Good releases also included Upsilon Acrux, Miriodor, Alamaailman Vasarat, and a bunch of others besides, many 2009 releases I've enjoyed.

Big disappointments were the Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree releases.  Also I really don't care for the newest from Zu.

Also, I would expect the impending new releases from Magma and IZZ to make my top 5.

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Worst are from Umphres McGee, Muse and Dream Theater.

My top 3 (Best to Worst):

1. Transatlantic- The Whirlwind 5 stars
2. Dream Theater- Black Clouds & Silver Linings 5 stars
3. Mastodon- Crack The Skye 4 stars

My Bottom 3 (Worst to Best):

1. Tangerine Dream- Flame 1 star(absolutely unlistenable)
2. Ozric Tentacles- The Yumyum Tree 2 stars
3. Porcupine Tree- The Incident 2 stars (just because I was expecting so much of it...)

I just did some counting after I saw this thread and I own 32 2009 albums!Embarrassed

I actually haven't listened to some (many) of them, and I usually dedicate my time to only one of them for a period of time. I only know about 12 of them well enough to place them, and I've found only 2 five star albums. I have many 3 and 4's, a couple 2's, and a single one star rating. I will definitely edit this as I get to know some of these 2009 albums better.

Favorite is hard probably Knifeworld's Buried Alone: Tales Of Crushing Defeat.  I think it gets bonus points for being fairly recent and a new artist discovery.  Least even more hard, I've only got seven from this year so far, I'd probably go with Stewart and Gaskin's Green and Blue, which I still like.  I've not been adding much from this year this year and there are no real turkeys.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

The white number fields stand for first or few listens only, so even though Mew has been quite a disappointment, I'm not judging it yet. AiC might be a bit too high, but anyway it's a damn brilliant album. There's some Finnish non prog stuff missing, but they probably wouldn't make it to the top nor the bottom.

While I loved it enough to give it a 5, a lot of people don't like the newer Dream Theater albums. They say they're too "formulatic" and "predictable". While I STRONGLY disagree with these comments, I've lmost learned to accept it.

So far I've purchased a little over 100 albums of 2009 ... the year really turning out great. In fact I've been wondering whether it's the best year for prog since 1974 ... Big smile

Well I'm glad that Dream Theater hasn't lost their audience completely. The reason BC&SL is not a good album is because it has no soul. Dream Theater aren't inspired to make that music; they're just making it to have made something. The lyrics are a joke. They don't mean anything. Perhaps "The Best of Times" means something because it's written for Mike's father, but that doesn't excuse the general cheesiness or blatant Rush immitations in the music. LaBrie doesn't write the lyrics, so he's forced to try to feel and express something that John or Mike wrote which is especially hard when it's a story about one of them going to Tuscany and fearing for his life because he thinks the count is a cannibal. If the music were more light-hearted and jocular, maybe it would have been a passable song, but the band and LaBrie are trying to inject serious emotions into a story that simply doesn't facilitate such things. Just an example. Oh, and what about those car-crash sound samples in the opener? Hilariously awful. I could go on, however I'm going to stop there.
