Well certainly not by me, anyway. I'm sure Zappa was familiar with other forays into jazz-rock before recording Hot Rats. Since at least '68 Zappa was playing with jazz-rock and one might say that Davis was getting into jazz-rock by '67). Hot Rats is still a great album and very influential album, as is Bitches Brew of course. Incidentally, one of my favourite albums that hopped on the Bitches Brew bandwagon is Donald Byrd's Electric Byrd. Love "Estavanico" http://mog.com/music/Donald_Byrd/Electric_Byrd/Estavanico And here's a cool late 60's jazz-rock recording: There is so much great Jazz-Rock from the late 60's and early 70's: an electrifying, phenomenal time in music. |

I've got a sweet spot for the guitar-dominated Hot Rats.

I've always loved the Flo and Eddie era, especially the Fillmore East 1971 album. Also, 200 Motels and Billy the Mountain are mind-bending.
Every FZ album is the best one of course. |

From list - Hot Rats. Voted for "others", "Jazz From Hell" is better for me, as some FZ other albums as well

Apostrophe would be the one that I listen to most, followed by Joe's Garage, Zappa in NewYork, and Sheik Yerbouti.

Though the one I play the most lately is Lumpy Gravy. OSFA is up there too.

Joe's Garage is pretty outstanding. Came very close to peeing myself with laughter on a number of times because of the lyrics on that record... However, I must say The Man From Utopia is damn good too, that was the album that got me into Zappa, thanks to my mum.

This is a tough one. All Zappa albums hold a multitude of delights. I went for 'Hot Rats' as it was the first one I 'got into' and it is an absolute classic.
