Topic: A Scaling Idea Posted: September 21 2009 at 15:10 |
To put in perspective how rare 1's and 5's should be I like to think of the 5 points as being a 0-10 scale
1 2 3 4 5
0 2.5 5 7.5 10
This puts the separations at:
1 = 0-1.25
2 = 1.26-3.75
3 = 3.76-6.25
4 = 6.26-8.75
5 = 8.76-10
I see that I probably need some of my 5 star albums to the 4 star category.

Says nothing about how scarce your ratings should be.
Why are people convinced you should only have a certain amount of 5 star ratings.

There is definitely a tendency to want to review your favorites, and not spend time to really listen to music you don't like. (Both of which skews your list up) But an 8.5/10 album really probably does belong as a 4 star, and I'm not sure all of my ratings reflect that.
I'm not changing anything for awhile though, I'd rather do new reviews...

It's an interesting concept though. When I write my (very) few reviews I'll try to remember to use it. I'm feeling a review coming up in the next few weeks so I'll test it out then. Why make it the scale you have instead of, say, 0-2, 2.01-4, 4.01-6, 6.01-8 and 8.01-10 though?

The point is that equal scaling makes in this way makes 1's and 5's harder to get than 2,3,4 which is the express intent of the site.

Oh, so it's purposefully giving 1 star and 5 star only 1.25 possible points instead of the 2.5 that 2-4 get, I see.

I don't see how that scale applies to the 3 star rating, which is supposed to be used for "good" albums. When I see a scale that is out of 10, I would not think that an album is good if it has a rating of 4/10. It doesn't fit the description, or at least how I interpret it. I guess my scaling system would be something closer to this: 1 stars-0 to 1.99 2 stars- 2 to 4.99 3 stars- 5 to 7.99 4 stars-8 to 8.99 5 stars- 9 to 10 Not as balanced as yours, but it roughly fits my existing ratings of albums. It's actually quite unbalanced actually. Everyone will interpret the star ratings differently, which is why I just let the accompanying star descriptions guide my grading. Just my 2 cents.

Your scale is probably where alot people rate from their gut. I was trying to do something a little more analytical, which is certainly not necessarily better.

Everyone rates differently, your scale seems nice.
