I'd take just Tales from Topographic Oceans over King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, and Gentle Giant.

I prefer the first trio of bands (Symphonic), but prefer King Crimson over all bands listed above in both categories.

| I hate Eclectic prog. I don't even know why I'm on the team.
Joking aside...I do love Gentle Giant- I've rated several of their albums with five stars.
I also like King Crimson (in my opinion, this is the definitive Eclectic band), but I've never rated one of their albums a five.
Van der Graaf Generator...meh...I have to be in the mood, and even then, I only like a few albums.
As far as other bands go, I love The Gourishankar and The Tangent.
I also just got the new SBB (my first experience with that group), and I really enjoy it.

Been whondering alot of times myself why you are in the eclectic team when you dont even seem to like most eclectic stuff. You seem to be much more of a symphonic guy... i gues no one els wanted the job so you hade to take it?

This is true, but my preferences don't disable me from, for example, judging whether or not an artist belongs in the Eclectic prog category.

I'm not a big fan of Yes and ELP, though I love 70's Genesis. I really like King Crimson, and Gentle Giant really attracts me though I'm not into them very much yet. VDGG is the most unique and extraordinary band I know, and absolutely one of my all time favorites, maybe even the all time favorite. My vote obviously goes to the Eclectic bands.

You're a good member of the team, and I might re-join it at some time. It's a difficult category. Sometimes things just shout out Eclectic, but often it's a very analytical process. The evaluation process is always interesting and, indeed, one doesn't need to like the music to recognise the qualities that make something suitable for Eclectic. Since it's such a mixed bag by its very nature, a team member is bound to be exposed to much music that doesn't appeal, but that does not influence whether we think something fits even if we're not enthusiastic about the job. Okay, maybe it can somewhat, but that's why there are teams -- each person bringing his/her own perspectives. Zargus, Rico tends to choose people who had a good general knowledge of Prog since one should be quite familiar with all of the categories since it's about music that combines various Prog styles without being dominated by any one of them. When I joined, it was known that I was most into the "avant" side of things, but what's been great about the team is that we are varied in musical tastes, even if they intersect, so each could bring more specialised knowledge and outlook. Oh yes, I knew you liked The Tangent, I forgot. I was impressed with
their live performances, and realised that it was the production that
hadn't appealed to me.
King Crimson is king of PA, methinks. It's my favourite of the representatives, and Larks' Tongues
in Aspic ranks amongst my favourite albums in PA. Somehow Bubu's
Anabelas came closest to being my Eclectic album yardstick, but being
Eclectic I guess there is no particularly definitive album. I still
have some problems with Hammill's vocals at times (still love VdGG), and GG, though my
favourite some years ago has palled for me over time. My favourites
include Emmanuael Booz, Jean-Paul Prat, Kultivator, Gnidrolog, Ma
Banlieue Flasque, and Jean-Pierre Alarcen.

great and difficuly poll...
GENESIS are my all time favorite band,YES created some absolutely awesome music but I do not like ELP that much...
On the other side KING CRIMSON are a very intricate and ground-breaking band,VAN DER GRAAF are also quite good yet difficult to get into, while I absolutely love GENTLE GIANT,it's one of the most challenging bands ever!
So no vote for me...Both trios of bands are in summary equal to my ears!

I prefer eclectic overall, and as far as the three chosen artists from each go I prefer eclectic as well. I like GG, KC and VdGG a lot, and as far as the symph three go, I like Yes and Genesis a lot and ELP...not as much.

I would prefer just Van der Graaf Generator above Yes, ELP and Genesis together. King Crimson is a bit better then VdGG and Gentle Giant is one of the most brilliant bands that ever played. Eclectic it is!

well i dont have as many records as i should have to judge all thies bands (lack of money) i have 3 King Crimson album In Court of the Crimson King, In wake of Poseidon and Larks Toungs in Aspicks, 3 Gentle Giant albums the self titled debut, Acuaired by Taste and Octopus, 1 Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Haerts (stil strugles with it ), 2 Genesis albums, Selling Englan and Foxtrot, 3 Yes, Fragile, Close to the Edge anf Relayer and 3 ELP albums, Tarkus, Trilogi and Brain Salad Surgery
i like best as a hole the symphonic bands better as I stil dont get VDGG, stil Gentle Giant is my favourite prog-band, and Genesis not far behind, Close to the Edge is an unmatched achivment and is uniqe album. EL&P is okey i like som songs, and other songs are funny. King Crimson are Kings of the realm of prog while the Giants are rather Gentle in there aproach to fame, but in the Begining it was Genesis and i have to say Yes to wote Symph.

Hmm for me Yes > Genesis > King Crimson > VDGG > Gentle Giant > ELP
So if each place is worth a point I guess Symphonic wins 12-9 :D

I'm better than dirt. Well, most kinds of dirt, not that fancy store-bought dirt... I can't compete with that stuff.

1. Genesis (6 points) 2. Yes (5 points) 3. King Crimson (4 points) 4. Van der graaf Generator (3 points) 6. ELP (1 point) 6. Gentle Giant (1 point)
Symphonic- 12 points Eclectic- 8 points
Symphonic wins.
