Topic: 1979 I had an album for a while Posted: September 05 2009 at 14:50 |
It was about 1979 and a friend of mine went travelling and I looked after his record collection, we have since lost touch, but there was one record that I have been trying to recall, I have just looked through the entire A-Z listing on here but nothing jumped out at me. Maybe someone knows what it was, this is what I can remember about it..... - the cover was a glossy close-up of a stylus on a record (I think it could have been a painting) - the first track started with a dog/wolf growling which then went into a fast paced prog (jazz?) rock, I think mainly instrumental - this bit maybe wrong but I thought there was a date on the cover, something like 2040, maybe part of the band or album name, I don't think they were British, maybe Scandanavian? Does this ring any bells with anyone? Any help would be much appreciated as this has been bugging me for years. ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif) BTW here's an incentive for you - I work with the guys at Classic Rock magazine and they don't know what it is!!

My guess is that it might have been Off the Record or Level Headed by Sweet, although I don't know exactly how either started. They were trying to get some musical cred at the time, and they experimented around with various styles.

Thanks for the reply, but definitely not Sweet, that's not the cover, I seem to remember that the cover wasn't that obvious and darker.

May not look like it from this picture, but it fits the description
...one of Roger Dean's oddest covers.

They were trying to get some musical "cred" much earlier than this. Sweet Fanny Adams was the album that they tried to gain some respect on.

Except on the American cover, where I think the inside gatefole became the cover It was the tape deck?Gibson Explrer painting. And even the UK cover wasn't "generic" as it was a tasteful black and white pic. But I see what you mean.

Just in case people thought I was completely off my trolley by posting that SNAFU cover, here is the full gatefold picture:
Whether it is the correct album or not, (SNAFU were R&B Funk Rock with slight Prog overtones, a bit like Come Taste The Band era Deep Purple in places), it is a great picture by Roger Dean, and the only one he painted in oils.
(sorry for the crap scan ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif) )

sorry guys but not Sweet or SNAFU, the album I am looking for was I think maybe a one off, not someone I have ever heard of before or since, not sure why but I keep thinking Scandanavian? It definitely had a number in the title, like a date in the future.
I am trying to think what the music was like, I used to listen to it quite a lot when I had it and regretted not taping it after I gave it back. As I said I think it was more fast jazzy guitar prog rock and mainly instrumental, more akin to Jeff Beck like Blow by Blow maybe??

First time I've ever seen that Dean painting! How far back does he go with that?
