Hi there!

My name is Witold, I'm 17 years old and I live in the Netherlands (which obviously makes my international nickname "Weed"). I discovered progressive music about six months ago, starting with Porcupine Tree and later finding out about all the classic prog rock bands. I've been lurking on PA for a month or so and finally decided to sign up, so yeah : 3 I enjoy a huge variety of progressive rock music, from Van der Graaf Generator to Opeth and everything in between basically, (although the budget of a 17 years old kid is pathetically small and I've only managed to afford about 20 CDs as of yet) and I hope to expand my knowledge of progressive music much further in the near future... and maybe get into King Crimson and RIO/Avant-Prog because that stuff is pretty damn hard to stomach LOL

Nice to meet all of you!

Welcome! Any person with a duck avatar is more than welcome, so come on up. Seeing you like Van der Graaf, Opeth and Porcupine Tree and have issues with King Crimson, I suggest you start with either the Larks Tongues in Aspic or Red album by King Crimson, Larks Tongues preferred.

Thanks for the recommendation (: I've already listened to In the Court of the Crimson King and Red and I do -somewhat- enjoy both, but most of the time I'm just wondering what the hell is going on D: I'll try Lark's Tongues asap though.

And yeah RDT, all the time in the world! I'm very grateful to have found out about this amazing music so early in my life... I'll let all my friends have fun with the likes of Lady Gaga and Evanescence while I have the whole of progarchives to explore and enjoy <3

If you don't like Klassic Crimson, shoot for The Power to Believe.

That one is one of my favorites from that band.

I'll give it a shot. Going to visit a record store later today (I have €25 to spend, at last!) and I'll see if I can get something by King Crimson, either Lark's Tongues or The Power to Believe. I'm not even close to giving up on the classics yet either, though. : D

Also looking to buy a Camel record, any recommendations? I was thinking of Mirage, it sounded amazing to me the first (only) time I heard it, but The Snow Goose and Moonmadness are supposedly very good too. o:

For me personally, Camel's best of that trio is Moonmadness, with The Snow Goose as a close second.  Mirage is very good, but for me, doesn't compare to the other two.

May I also suggest some classic Kansas?  Wink

Happy shopping! Smile

You can start with those 2 for Camel : Snow Goose & Moon... and for KC, check also "Discipline" and "Thrak", if you want a more modern sound with the same music quality.

All right then! King Crimson, Camel and Kansas it is : D They have a very sexy discount for classic prog records at my local store so I should be able to get all three of them for 25 bucks. Thanks for all the recommendations guys o: there's so much left to buy and listen to... it's a little overwhelming O.o I'll let you know what I purchased when I get back in a few hours!

Hi guys, I'm back and was more or less successful in my quest for new CDs. The Snow Goose was the only CD of Camel's golden era they had, so I got that one. I also bought In the Court of the Crimson King, which I will simply play regularly until I start liking it <__< I'm that stubborn. Unfortunately they didn't have anything by Kansas there so I got the latest record by Mew instead - an indie art rock dream popish band (it's impossible to describe really) I enjoy very much. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

No Kansas, eh?

Then you should find a new place to shop.  Wink

I just worked my way through ITCotCK and definitely enjoyed some parts of it (Epitaph, ITCotCK) but yeah, Moonchild... I have no idea what to think of it. It doesn't make any sense to my ears :c

If you are interested, King Crimson's In the Wake of Poseidon has a song similar to Moonchild called The Devil's Triangle, which is a little closer to the Lark's Tongues sound. I would suggest In the Wake of Poseidon after Lark's, it is considered by some to be better than ITCOKC.

Welcome to PA.

17 years old and from The Netherlands, what a coincidence!Clap

If you want to get into King Crimson, I would really recommend their live albums. The performances always are very surprising with lots of improvisation that (usually) doesn't get boring or pointless. If you want to try Larks' Tongues, I'd say go for it! It's my favorite King Crimson studio album featuring improvised madness and at the same time some very well composed pieces of music. Nearly every song from the album is among the bands best work. Good luck getting into them!

I see. I'm going to give ITCotKC a few more spins... if that doesn't help, I'll get Lark's Tongues in Aspic or the Power to Believe... I really hope I can get into them though; I can hear it's great and revolutionary music, but something just won't...click?

Indeed! May I ask where in the Netherlands you live? If it's the same city maybe we could meet up and listen to some music sometime, if you'd like. I'd love to try KC's live albums but I can't buy everything I'd like, unfortunately... Maybe some time in the future (: I've noticed on the forums that you enjoy Porcupine Tree as well, will you be attending their concert on the 12th of October?

King Crimson is one of the most eclectic bands in the history of rock music, that's for sure...but I've never given a single one of their albums five stars so far on this site.  So don't despair if you find they are not one of your favorite bands.  They certainly are not one of mine (although I have tremendous respect for every incarnation of the group).

I live in Maarssen, a city very close to Utrecht. It actually is sort of connected to Utrecht...
I will be at the Porcupine Tree gig the 12th of October for sure!Big smile It'll be the second concert I'll be at (Jethro Tull being the first) and I'm really looking forward to it.
