I also love Peter Gabriel! (with Genesis Wink)

As for Porcupine Tree, they're one of the greatest actual prog bands but two of theirs (In Absentia, I agree, but Lightbulb Sun. you should've put FOABP instead), I dont know. Same for Marillion. I'd have put only th Fish-era album Smile
Fair enough... But not on FOABP - I can't really see anything amazing in FOABP, other than the last 6 minutes of ANESTHETIZE and SENTIMENTAL aswell...

What about the Sky Moves Sideways then?

Their best, easily, but I wouldn't reccomend it to a new listener of Porcupine Tree or Prog.

^^Its alot less accessible than their other albums... Its great, but it takes more consideration than their other albums in my opinion.

Still unmissable, and who knows, it might turn someone on to prog

That's what I think. What about Opeth? I'd recommend Still Life or Ghost Reveries

I only have DAMNATION, DELIVERANCE, STILL LIFE and BLACKWATER PARK...

For a beginner, I'd reccomend BLACKWATER PARK and STILL LIFE

^  Still Life is probably their best! Smile
But get Ghost Reveries. It's as good as Still Life (or almost)

It's really hard to sum up every different "flavour" of prog into a 10 album list, but I would try to expose someone to as many different genres as possible.

Caravan - In the Land of the Grey and Pink
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Rush - Permanent Waves
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Can - Tago Mago
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Henry Cow - Western Culture
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

Even though I tried to space out my selections I still didn't cover any modern bands or metal, although I don't really know any metal anyways. I know that some of the ones I picked are the top album in there genre but they seem to me to be the best representatives of the genre they are from.

this is not very helpful. everyone's got a different idea of what albums are best for newbies. Although i agree with whoever said that the BIG albums are not necessarily the best ones to start out with (ex. Fragile or Yes Album over Close to the Edge)

but again, depends on the person. maybe they like classical music, and rock music, but never knew progressive rock existed. Someone gives them a copy of CttE and they crap themselves at how good the music is and cant believe theyve never heard of any of it before.

as a prog rock fan, i can say it was a slow (not too slow though) process, becoming a fan of all this music, what with being exposed to even so much more at the same time.

In my opinion, you first need to start with more accesible things, maybe even Prog-related stuff, and work your way up to the more classic albums. Rule of thumb: Don't start with Pink Floyd! My friends at least, thought it was boring and gave up on prog immeadiately

OK, if I were talking to somebody new who wanted a list of prog albums to listen to, I'd probably refer him to the progarchives top rated album list and then tell him to omit all of the Floyd albums.

But if he didn't trust that, then I'd go with this.

1.  Close to the Edge -- Yes
2.  Selling England by the Pound -- Genesis
3.  Permanent Waves -- Rush
4.  Space Revolver -- The Flower Kings
5.  Mirage -- Camel
6.  Captain Beyond -- Captain Beyond
7.  Spectral Mornings -- Steve Hackett
8.  Per Un Amico -- PFM
9.  UK -- UK
10.  Red -- King Crimson

It would be something like this... though I'm not completely sure. I think this list shows most of the different sides of prog, though there's of course much more to be discovered after these albums.

1. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
2. H to He, Who Am The Only One - VDGG
3. Foxtrot - Genesis
4. Close To the edge - Yes
5. Songs From The Wood - Jethro Tull
6. Permanent Waves - Rush
7. Larks' Tongues In Aspic - King Crimson
8. Deadwing - Porcupine Tree
9. Lateralus - Tool
10. Free Hand - Gentle Giant

1. Yes-- Close to the Edge
2. Porcupine Tree-- Fear of a Blank Planet
3. Rush-- Permanent Waves
4. King Crimson-- In the Wake of Poseidon
5. Dream Theater-- Images and Words
6. Jethro Tull-- thick as a Brick
7. Queensryche-- Operation: Mindcrime
8. Renaissance-- Turn of the Cards
9. ELP-- Emerson, Lake and Palmer
10. VDGG: H to He who am the only one

I tried to cover most of the niches of prog, because someone new would want to learn a bit about the metal side as well as the symphonic side of prog and so on and put some recent and older albums on there for the same reason.
