In the 1970s, there was a group from Sweden and their name was ABBA. The pop group infected the whole world with their infectious melodies and harmonious vocals, and kitsch stage costumes. This is the story of Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid.

They started their international fame by competing in the 1974 Eurovision song contest, with a song called “Waterloo.” “Waterloo” was number one in the UK for six weeks, even making it to the US top ten. Many of their biggest hits are instantly recognizable, such as “Fernando,” “SOS,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and their most popular one, “Dancing Queen.” This song was their only number in the US, and it was specially performed at the wedding reception of the King of Sweden. “Dancing Queen” is the most infamous Abba song. Many bands have recorded this classic, including U2 and the A*teens, but no version of the song has ever received success or critical acclaim. No one can remake the original sound and magic that is “Dancing Queen.”

They were at their peak of their popularity in the late 1970s, with the release of “Abba: The Movie.” A huge commercial campaign included TV appearances, radio appearances, their own TV specials. They marketed soap, perfume, socks and clothing, and such memorabilia as pins, pens, cardboard displays, posters, and much more. Abba’s success continued until their break up in 1982, when pressures and tensions got worse. Due to the divorces within the group, and the death threats against them, and the kidnapping threats on their children. They disbanded.

94% of the students at ESHS knew who Abba were. 44% said that they like Abba, 27% said they kind of liked Abba, and 27% said they didn’t like Abba. 44% said they didn’t have a favorite band member, 33% said Frida was their favorite, and 22% said they liked Agnetha. 22% said “Dancing Queen” was their favorite Abba song, 33% didn’t know their favorite song, 1% said their favorite was “Fernando,” 1% said “SOS” was their favorite, 1% said “Take a Chance on Me” was their favorite, and 22% said other.

Abba is still well known today and are widely popular. Abba are well known and are growing in popularity and have sold more than 350 million records worldwide, becoming the second best selling band of all time, second only to the Beatles.  Abba will be remembered for years to come, and aren’t waning in popularity, but rising. Long live Abba.

The first album I ever recieved as a present was an ABBA album. I was about 5. Cant remember what it was called, but it was a gatefold with a picture of them all sitting on a park bench. It opened with SOS. I've always liked that song...

I've no gripe with ABBA. As far as 'pop groups' go I think they were pretty good. At least they actually composed and wrote all those songs. They were not industry puppets! The harmonies were great, the melodies strong, without being annoying and choruses memorable. I would probably have paid to see them, back in the day...

I've always liked ABBA.

A fun parody:

And Abba really did come out with some proggy-sounding music:

I cannot stand ABBA. Repugnant overblown pop music with no substance besides of making me angry. Their biography is on my must-read list this fall and will probably be read during the week I am in hospital for a heart surgery. The local doctors are fed up with trying to find my (non excisting) puls and they have decided to give me a heart. Maybe I will then like ABBA ?

LOL

Careful, the bold part may incite suggestions for this to be included in the archives -- just subtitute the word rock for pop and one can see the strong prog relation. Wink

Can a brief history really be all about ABBA?  ABBA?  I won't knock them musically, but I was into much better music in their heyday and still am.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

LOL

well, as that worked so well...

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go camping, and pitch their tent under the stars. During the night, Holmes wakes his companion and says: "Watson, look up and tell me what you deduce."

Watson says: "I see millions of galaxies each containing millions of stars, and even if a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life, and some of that life may be as intelligent as we, then on one of those planets there may be two lifeforms staring into the night sky and pondering the mysteries and wonders of life and the Universe. Is that what you mean Holmes?"

Holmes replies: "No Watson, you idiot. I mean somebody stole our tent."
