I'm not big on growling (though I love Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye), but I definitely prefer Opeth's compositions. It's interesting that most of the posters here seem to prefer Opeth, yet most of the voters prefer DT, and that a poll with such a huge number of votes (171), at this time, has only made it to page 2. Now it's at page 3 with this post. PS Sorry to the Strawbs. ;)

Oh god, I love both. Such a hard choice. Opeth have never disappointed me. I love all their albums, man.
DT are great as well. Scenes From A Memory against Watershed? Almost impossible to call it, I think.

probably because the poll allows you to vote multiple times, so it's not accurate

There are both good and bad stuff by Dream Theater, while there's only amazing stuff by Opeth.

Very easily Scenes From A Memory

Fixed No seriously, I don't find Watershed to be their best release. With 5 star masterpieces like Still Life and Blackwater Park out there, Watershed falls short IMO. Still Life vs. Scenes would be a much harder question.

Let's see... one has been around since the 80s and the other one is a post-89 aberration.
That was easy.

DT win on musicianship, style and compositions, Opeth on vocal aspect and (overall) lyrics. So 3-2 for DT !

Opeth. A much more consistent career, and they continue putting out masterpieces, while DT's last real masterpiece was metropolis

DT focusses very much on musicianship, Opeth has the greater songwriting and more eye for atmosphere. If I had make a top 10 out of all the albums of both bands, DT would only be on a 6th spot with Awake

i like both bands very much but my vote goes for DT in my opinion DT are better musicians and better band live. I saw both together on the first prognation tour 2 years ago and DT blew Opeth way!

Oh, this really puts me on the spot. I love both bands, but I would have to say I like DT just a slight bit more. That could change, though. I've been listening to much more Opeth recently.

Nothing but brilliant music from Opeth! DT has some good stuff, but I never really got into them...
