Wow E-dub,  that is a great post.  I'm going to wait for this year's DVD, it still has This Strange Engine and Estionia plus it's all Marillion material rather than covers.  Plus one of my favs that I don't have, When I Meet God.   I didn't follow the thread as I was disappointed not to be able to go.  It's been long enough now that I can read your wonderful post and vicariously enjoy.  Wish I could have been there with you.  Kenmar

E- dub,   after reading your convention story, I like to share a story about a band other than Marillion.  Is that OK in this Marillion appreciation thread?                                        Kenmar

Covers have never really done a thing for me. I'm so glad Marillion didn't do anything like that at this convention.

Glad you liked the review. The memories are still too fresh. Best weekend of my life.

If you go here, you'll see the 3rd installment of the making of the new acoustic album.

Actually, seeing this video makes me a bit more intrigued, I have to say. Still not overly excited about it, but I am getting a little bit more stoked than before.

I'm sure it's a beautiful instrument, but that new guitar of Rothery's is ugly. Weird body style. I guess it's a prototype and should be getting one with a more traditional Strat body. Of course, Rothery knows his guitars better than I and wouldn't play a sub par instrument.

I hope he keeps the strat shape - I can't really think of him ever playing with another electric guitar live, except for the middle section of Forgotten Sons on the Recital Of The Script concert...

Reading  E dub's post of the Marillion convention this year was the singular best post I've ever read on this site.  The words combined with the pictures combined to tell a great story of a group of 3 shows.  In pacticular the performance of This Strange Engine and H's crowd surfing.  Now I've never read of H doing something of this sort and the sponteaity of the situation obviously made it something special.  With the internet, Marillion's pleathora of DVDs etc,  the crowd know that crowd surfing is not something H is prone to.

I can relate to the experience of E dub being in the crowd and haivng H come toward him as during Peter Gabriel Plays Live tour.  By now PG's crowd surfing exploits are well documented but at the time when he started playing "Lay Your Hands on Me", we had no idea what we were in for.

I've seen so many concerts that I can't pick a favorite, but I can pick a moment.  As the Gabe came toword me head first face down,  I reached up with my hands and he graped both.  My fingers interliked with my favorite artist, face to face, his makeup inches from my eyes, I passed him on atnd smiled.

That was 25+ years ago and I don't think about it as much anymore.  Reading about H reminded me and I thought that E dub might have experienced a similar rush of excitment and for simlar reason, the unexpectedness.  That was my second time seeing PG and nothing in the first show made me expect the trust fall into the crowd and the ensuing surf.

I wanted so badly to go to the Marillion convention, as lclose to my home of oregon as they'll ever get,  but I couldn't come up with the cash.  I'll buy the DVD the day it''s released

Man, I'm not sure how to respond to the first sentence. First and foremost, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I truly enjoyed writing it. Hopefully their next convention will be closer and you'll be able to attend. Let me know if you do and the first round will be on me. Approve

To add on to your experience, it's little things like h or Gabriel body surfing that can make a lasting impression. You see them up on that stage like they're larger than life; but, once they come down to the crowd it's abundantly clear that they're just one of us. It just sort of brings the whole thing into reality.

My main concern is I didn't want him to fall. As he was going out, there were plenty of people to help him; however, as he was coming back, the spot where I was had sort of separated a bit and he was being projected back to a bare spot on the floor. That didn't last long as he got closer and everyone started to close in a bit. It was just amazing how an otherwise disasterous moment was saved by this simple act.

As for getting to the convention, start saving now and try to make it. I had always heard about how special it was. And I'm not even talking about the live performances themselves, but all of the great people you meet converging for a singular purpose. One of the guys from Canada chartered a bus and organized a trip out to the Canadian countryside to a place called The Sugar Shack for an amazing breakfast and to tour the grounds and see how maple syrup is made. It was probably a huge headache for him, but he pulled it together and showed us a great time. And there's people like him everywhere. Some of the nicest people I've ever had the privilege to meet.

With the exception of Misplased Childhood, which is one of my favourite prog records , I can't get into this band at all. Do you know a good DVD I could buy from the group?  Probably I could appreciate them better that way.

Live From Loreley, Somewhere In London or Marbles On The Road would be my suggestions.

Most definitely Marbles on the Road - to me, the ultimate live expression from the greatest living band on this earth.

I've just watched the third instalment of the band's l=m video bulletin. I'm getting more and more excited about this album.

I lived in Oswestry when they did Live at Welsh Walls, which you can still get from the band's site I believe. This was totally acoustic, and was done at a local restaurant as a thank you to the town after the recording of Radiation. I remember getting a preview of the album at the studio, and chatting to H & Rothery in both Welsh Walls and The Boars Head, a local madhouse of a pub. Happy memories of a great time. I think the acoustic stuff on record will be a fantastic experience.

I've got that disc. I'm not big on covers, but I love their version of "Abraham, Martin & John". The entire disc is amazing.

Do you have their A Piss Up In A Brewery DVD from the Bass Brewery? Fun little gig.
