I know that Southern NY has produced both Dream Theater and Coheed and Cambria. With NYC I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them.

Wow, very surprised...hello, Japanese mate.
Of course, I love Yoninbayashi, especially the first work "Isshoku-Sokuhatsu" should be one of real Japanese progressive albums I consider. I strongly agree with you. Now, as a Japanese rock fan, I do learn about lots of terrific Japanese bands and recommend them to all PA members here...this is my pleasure. You've let me know a lot about Japanese rock scene so I'll take some time to listen, dig and digest some of them... Thanks! |

If only somebody knew Czech prog rock. Not so many of this genre is here, because of communist regime (48-89), they repressed any sign of "western" culture, even blues was almost forbidden, but still popular amongst some people.
Anyway, if you are lucky, try something by Petr Novak od Synkopy 61, they're really good. I like them a lot. |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Actually Collegium Musicum is not Czech, but Slovak (they were from Bratislava). As was Fermata
If you want Czech groups , try out Modry Effekt /Blue Effekt, Plastic People Of The Universe, Progress2, & Flamengo
Modern Uz Jsme Doma are Czechs, but not to be confused with Ako Doma who are Slovals

Im denmark we did have a huge prog scene in the 70's, not the kinda prog that compares to Crimson though, more of a Folk-Prog-Beat and a Jazz Rock scene.
Sadly most of the bands are very hard to get recordings with
I will just mention a few:
Steppeulvene :
They recorded only one record - Hip. Next year Eik the lead singer went out to India and never came back.
The Music is a beat / psychedelic / Folk 1967, but the legend is still Huge in denmark. Mainly due to the
Acid influence in the lyrics & the fate of the lead singer.
The Savage Rose:
The most talented band denmark ever have created. Did anything from 1967 and troughout the 70's
And you will find an amasing talented band with the most stunning female vocal.
They have made records all up to resent years, but the are less prog and more towards world music.
Burning Red Ivenho - Just a great danish Prog band
Guitar Flute Trombone Harmonica Sax Organ Bass & Drums, a variation you will only find in the best of Prog. ; Golden era 1969-1972
Video clip (not that young anymore ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcfd1isItD8&feature=related
Jazz / Rock : Entrence, a great Jazz/Rock group, futuring Palle Mikkelborg: trumpet, flygelhorn, keyboards
Tjeck out MP3 here : http://www.mikkelborg.dk/ Edited by tamijo - July 20 2009 at 10:44 |

Hi (I am back...)
Estonia had some pretty remarkable prog bands in the past, such as: In Spe, Kaseke, Ruja, Mess, Radar (this one was pure fusion though), Pantokraator...
These days here are several new and young prog bands, yet I can't recall any names right now because they didn't release any albums as of yet! ...
Ah, one comes to mind though and it's Contus Firmus. When this band would finally record and release their stuff, I am sure quite a few prog-jaws would drop! lol
In Spe did live-comeback recently on Tartu Muusikapävad festival. Though I don't know whether they plan to record any new material or not...
However Pantokraator did a full blown comeback! Not only did they perform several times already, they also released the new album "Tormidesööjad" (The Storm Eaters) and it's a pure bliss for lovers of sympho/neo prog with strong ethno touch. In fact I would be glad to start a discussion on it here... Should I start a stand alone thread for that? I am just not sure if anybody else has heard it...
