I don't know him, so the answer is no. Seems like quite the character.

At least you can understand what he's saying.
Unlike that "throwing up into your throat" sound that ruins most death metal.
To me, barf vocals seems like an excuse for not being able to come up with a decent melody.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Oh believe me I know what growling is and I'm sure most people here know it, too. In a way Portnoy's horrible "emphatic speaking" as one of you called it may not be actual growling in the strictest sense of the word (if we ever find a musical-ready definition of that word) but what else could we call it then? Portnoy in the bathroom with constipation? Portnoy angry? Portnoy upset? Is just terrible, tragic growling.
For true growling, check Amorphis' latest. Or check any Incantation, Benediction, Deicide album. Or any of more than wo82938279372837190`92- bands that play extreme metal today.
Portnoy's growling is neither deep growling nor the ridiculous screamo-growling of modern metalcore bands... Is the nothingness of all nothingness...
wrong experiment

Leave it to Opeth Porty, their the only ones who can make growls sound like singing.

Yeah, I'm serious. ![]() Well, that's just a matter of opinion. Some people (like me) are fine with that part while some do not. I think the same thing happens with Portnoy's vocals on A Nightmare to Remember. I personally like that part of The Glass Prison way more than Portnoy's attempt at harsh singing. Petrucci at least sound more convincing to my ears. But as I said before, it's just personal taste. In fact, it's hard to explain. I found Portnoy's vocals to be out of place on ANTR, but I like when he does that on The Shattered Fortress. Two different songs, the same vocal style, and for me it works in just one of them. If you ask me about the most laughable thing the band has ever done I'd say that would be the robot-like vocals in the chorus of Burning My Soul. ![]() |

Just so y'all know, as much as I might sound like I'm defending the vocals... I'm not. I hate them. But then A Nightmare to Remember is the second weakest song on the new album, right behind A Rite of Passage. Everything else is much better. Edited by LiquidEternity - July 14 2009 at 16:44 |

After giving the album a couple listens, I have to say that the 'growling' on the album certainly isn't growling. It's just shouting basically, though a bit harsher. I don't care for them in any event.
Though I sort of like the growl element in the chorus of "Count of Tuscany" even though I really don't care for the chorus to that song, or the song in general anyways.

Honestly, I preferred the real 'growls' from the link you posted. They worked better with the song, and the instrumentation seemed better as well: it included organs.

1) Is not growling, that is clear.
2) I don't like it, and I don't like any of the two alternate versions either. While MP singing is not technically good, it never bothered me before (well maybe a little in TDET), this time he sounds more forced than ever, and I think the vocal line itself is poor, and what's even more important in this case, the lyrics are terrible in that part (as in many parts on the album), making MP sound even worse. "It's a miracle he lived, is a blessing no one died, by the grace of god above, everyone survived..... uuuuuuhhhhhhh". JP you can do better than that. 3) Also, the second "uuuuuuuhhhhh" doesn't help a bit. ![]() 4) I love DT, and to me growling and pissed-off-harsh singing like this doesn't belong in DT's music, it sounds forced and unnatural in the DT environment, I hardly think Rudess or Myung likes that kind of singing either (not to mention James). 5) But hey!!! luckly it doesn't last for long! well, then we have bits in The Count Of Tuscany, with exactly all the features listed in point 2 ![]() DT: get rid of this artifacts, please. They should have had a guest vox spot if they wanted a growl.

Thank you rpe9P--that was the funniest thing I've heard in days.
I got no problem with Portnoy being creative and trying new things, but that sequence is a perfect storm of cheese: Hilariously tame lyrics, the generic quarter note delivery, and all topped off with a gigantic spew at the end! Edited by Flucktrot - July 16 2009 at 07:26 |

Thank you, God of Rock, for this chance to kick ass
