Tonight! Michael met his death, and Mikael is meeting his death metal bandmates. (laugh track) King Crimson may sound good, but King Wilson sounds ever better. (laugh track) Who is the King of Prog? That is a "progblem". (laugh track) This is The Progbert Report. (progressive theme music)

Robert Fripp without a question. Peter Gabriel would be another good choice.

Good Post. But I would also have included Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill. But Fripp wins hands down! Not only is he the King of Prog, he's also the King of Nastiness!

As much as I like PT, I don't see why is he one of the choices, and I don't care about Opeth so obviously I think the same way about Akerfeldt (he is good but king of prog? give me a break) while there is no one from Genesis (Peter Gabriel wouldn't be exactly the best choice, who don't even listen to prog rock and have a good-but-not-very-prog solo career, I'd say Steve Hackett, who till this day is making prog albums), Rush (any of the three really), ELP (not one of my fav bands but could be there no doubt), DT (JP or MP) or other people such as Ian Anderson, Andy Latimer, Roine Stolt or Keith Emerson , just to name a few.
None of these for me, although Fripp or Howe would be logical choices from those four... |

Going with the majority: Robert Fripp is the obvious one. I would have only stuck with classic artists since I would not consider voting for someone in such a topic (where both classic musicians and modern ones are listed) if they were not making music during Prog's classic years, was influential and important to the foundations of Prog.
Incidentally, I'd be more likely to think of Frank Sinatra as the king of pop, but that's a more traditional form of pop music, and I guess he may be called the king of lounge, and one might say that a king must have a throne, not a lounger. Or Burt Bacharach. There are so many different forms of pop, anyway, and one can go much further back in history of course. SInce the 50's at least POP music has been considered a genre and not just short for popular music. Some consider Thriller to be the nadir of modern pop which gives credence to him as the king of modern pop. Of course it's all a bit silly. Fripp winning this was a foregone conclusion. |

I'll go with Fripp as the original King of prog. Wilson would be a contender for the modern Prince of Wales, I suppose. I would have liked some more choices, though. Gabriel, Anderson (Jon & Ian), Waters, Banks, and many others would be worthy contenders in a larger poll. Bring it on!

I agree. Robert Fripp would have a tough battle against Peter Gabriel, just to name someone.
Don't tell me this has been done before
![]() Nice poll, and of the four choices Fripp is the obvious one.
I'll vote for him right now.

I love the great Steve Howe, and I wish him all the luck in the world in his bid for king. He'd make a great leader. But even I who grew up listening to and playing along with Howe, even I voted Fripp.
