13th Floor Elevators I would say was important.
Would consider them more prog than most of the listed bands Edited by tamijo - June 26 2009 at 16:39 |

I really don't think the Beach Boys or the Byrds are proto-prog. I agree they were both experimental and influential but proto-prog no way. Some of the tracks could qualify as Progressive Rock here especially the Beatles "A Day in the Life" and of course tracks by Nice, Procul Harum, and Soft Machine.
Is there any recording dates for the Pretty Things S.F Sorrow who are not on the playlist?

I put Light My Fire and other material from the Door's debut album on the '66 playlist since it was recorded in August 1966. I have attempted to list the songs chronologically by recording date. It was released in January 1967.

Don't know if you think it is sacrilegious to say "Light My Fire" from The Doors first album (1967) is proto-prog. For that extended Vox Jaguar organ solo, if nothing else!

I consider Cream worthy of addition to PA under Proto-Prog as I feel that they made music that would fit the category. I supported that Rolling Stone's album before but am hardly convinced because I think they were jumping on the psyche bandwagon, and it's not that progressive.
How about a Pärson Sound track ? http://www.myspace.com/parsonsoundMaybe "Sov Gott RoseMarie"? |

In Wikipedia and allmusic, both 1967 and 1968 are mentioned as years of release. I think that you can choose if you put them on your 1967 or 1968 list (or both). I have not found an exact date of release yet.

Someone_else, What Love (Suite) is (was) on my playlist for 1968 as I haven't been able to establish when it was recorded or released. I thought for sure it was released in '68 though.
You shouldn't by any chance have a reference on that?

I suggest that you should add at least one track from the debut album of The Collectors, a Canadian gem from 1967 (sometimes dated 1968) that, to my amazement, has only one rating.

Sir, don't let these bands confuse you. In 1967 you would find a little prog here and there, but at this time more and more expanded to entire songs, not just sections of songs.
Their Satanic Majesties Request is heavy on raga and UK psyche (and space rock). You will find that some on this forum see this as proto-prog. Personally I'm undecided, but inclined to say it's not.
The Animals to me (again, on selected tracks) represent an early form of US psyche (ala Jefferson Airplane). Again, personally I'm not convinced Jefferson Airplane are proto-prog but they are on PA. The same with the Byrds, but they covered a much wider spectrum of genres (raga, US psyche, space rock) and ought to be on PA.
Recall that the list attempts to present all the songs from 1967 that had some progressive flavour. In 1968 I would have to list entire albums. But this is not the case in 1967.
