Hi all,
I want to buy some rare prog music... Problem is, I don't ever buy CD's anymore - all my music is in mp3 format, and I listen to it on iTunes at home / iPhone everywere else. Where can I find legal, ideally DRM-free mp3s of some rare bands? Not stuff like Genesis or ELP.. but for example, I want to get Cast - Al Bandaluz... but the only place I was able to find that stuff is Amazon, on a $35 CD. I don't want to go to torrents/IRC because I want to support those bands.. Any help? Thank you! |

^ agreed. I've been looking up thousands of albums on Amazon, Amazon MP3, CDBaby.com and eMusic.com over the years ... many rare albums are available as downloads today, from various sources. Cast is a special case though, their albums are available on Amazon as CDs but not downloads.
Have a look at these charts: http://progfreak.com/home/stores_availability.xhtml Or go to music database -> albums -> emusic if MP3 is an option for you - there I've listed prog albums at emusic by year. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - June 09 2009 at 13:23 |

Though I haven't bought from them, I found a lot of titles on Mindawn that I can't find anywhere else. And, believe it or not, I've found a good number on itunes as well.

When I buy digital music I do prefer to have it in FLAC or any lossless format (you'll never know when you'll get a great stereo to hear your music). If you need to convert the files to MP3 you can use foobar200 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) it gets the job done and has a great cost |

Hi,
In general, "prog" is much more about longer cuts and music ... and if you don't buy the CD's in general you will probably have a hard time getting a lot of this stuff elsewhere ...
I just had a flashback to the 70's ... iTunes had Yes cut up in pieces and selling it for the usual cents ... now if you want your favorite music piece cut up ... be my guest!
Personally I find it an insult to the artist ... and I hope Picasso's ghost teachs you about that !!!

You're only gonna support the record label unless the band itself has an own. Music groups won't ever see a penny from it. (I've not said you should download illegal, before someone misunderstands my sentence!)

I've found Amazon to be excellent and reasonably priced, whereas I don't rate e-music at all in terms of choice. Is this a UK thing?
However, most decent band sites these days will have a download facility, for example Marillion's site is superb. |

^ eMusic.com is a website with an unique price model ... the files are much cheaper than at any of the major legal download stores. But why ignore the portal just because it has a more limited selection of artists? They may very well have some of the albums you're looking for.
http://progfreak.com/home/charts.xhtml?y=*any&src=emusic This is just a small selection of albums that happen to have a rating at PF and were found to be available at eMusic. Just out of curiosity: Are some of those albums on your wishlist? The AMAZON MP3 store is quite good - it has some incredibly hard to find stuff, Like Chroma Key (Kevin Moore) and other stuff.

I agree with the E-Music supporters, they have a pretty good selection and are usually the cheapest once you take their various plans into account.
I used 7digital once and wasn't actually able to download the files that I was looking for. Nonetheless, it may be an option. |

I tend to agree - but it varies greatly from country to country. For example, Chroma Key is not available at Amazon.de MP3, which is what I have to use. eMusic.com has some regional restrictions too, but far less than Amazon from what I can tell. http://www.emusic.com/artist/Chroma-Key-MP3-Download/11619177.html |

Hmm, I don't know why you'd ever prefer an MP3 download to buying a CD? I mean, it costs relatively the same for the CD, plus the quality is so much better. And if you want to listen to it on your iPod, you can just upload the disc into your iTunes. Not sure what the dilemma is about owning the CD, it's definitely way better.

Yeah they won't see money from it, but they won't get signed again if their album sales aren't high enough...
