Topic: Which is your favorite epic song? Posted: March 19 2009 at 13:35 |
Hi!
Well, it's not about prog bands but I love those songs so much, I'm curious to know which one is your favorite and why!
By epic, I'm mean you know, songs that makes you feel wandering in the
mountains, the forest or in some foreign deserted lands... You know
what I mean ;)
If you know other songs like these ones, feel free to share Which is your favourite one among: - Led Zeppelin "Achilles Last Stand" - Black Sabbath "Children Of The Sea" - Black Sabbath "Heaven And Hell" - Black Sabbath "The Sign Of The Southern Cross" - Rainbow "Stargazer" - Judas Priest "Victim Of Changes" - Iron Maiden "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" - Iron Maiden "Sign Of The Cross" - Metallica "One" (we can't create polls anymore?)

Achilles Last Stand, no contest. And I mean no contest. I don't like any other song on the list.

*ppssssst* - you can make a poll in the "proto and related" lounge as I recall, which is where this thread should go anyways Anyways, from that list I'd have to pick Heaven And Hell, the sped up last section kicks my ass every time.

Toss up between Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Achilles. But Rime does not have James Patrick Page

It's a bunch of great songs in that list. All have been favourites at one point or another, except Metallica's One. Never been a fan of that band. Still the best song I've heard from them

"Supper's Ready " by a little known band called "early Genesis" remains my eternal favourite.
Heads up to the guy who mentioned Stargazer by Rainbow. I am not really a heavy metal aficionado, but I have been playing this a lot quite recently.
I saw Rainbow play live in 1977 ( Ronnie James Dio left the stage quite a lot during the concert, as I recall )and the music was very, very loud.
The album, Rainbow Rising, though overall quite average in my opinion, contains the wonderful Stargazer, which I consider to be the best heavy metal track ever recorded. It is just a truly magnificent piece - better than anything Deep Purple ever did.

There are some great tracks there, and I suppose a lot of it depends on where you are at the time.
I'm playing a lot of Sabbath at the moment, so Children of the Sea, which is amongst the greatest metal tracks ever written, but probably Stargazer for my all time fave. I lose myself in that world every time I hear it.

The entire Catch 33 record plays out as one song, and it's some of the best stuff I've heard in years.

I can think of only about 100 great epics. Sorry, no more. Most people will know them anyway.
The Odyssey by Symphony X and Monsters & Men by the Flower Kings will probably be the best of all.

Hum well, this topic was not really about songs which are epic because of the length but really because of the atmosphere. I'm not sure about Monsters & Men, I have to listen to it again but I really don't find The Flower Kings epic anymore, they do long and complex, full of sounds, songs but not really epic in my opnion

Stargazer gets my vote, but Gates of Babylon is even better.
