Well put, Raff! I must say that that review very well (and very coherently) describes my thoughts for the first listen of the album. Definitely a lot better than people give it credit for.

I'd label that as their darkest hour. Good thing the rest of the album kicks ass!

Personally, gave it a solid three, though I really like the album. Never actually saw any similarities with the predecessor myself (OK, style... but I didn't think of comparing individual tracks). The reason it's called poppy is that it has a lot of vocals. I think the areas in which it treads a fair bit of new ground are two: 1. The concept album. Their first for a while (though vague concepts could tie together some of the predecessors (Islands, Larks' for two) it's not really a concept or idea anyone else had tried to do, lyrically or musically. 2. The guitars are obviously doing odd things here, and they are the focus of attention for so much of the time. Personally, think the live versions destroy the album ones for 80s Crimson, but then, they were one hell of a live outfit. I'd have liked to see Bruford and Levin a bit more... active on that one. In the predecessor they were a constant, formidable, subtle groove. On Beat... less impressive.

Oooh, good album. I don't think I'd recommend it past fans, but fans will get a kick out of it. Pocket and Dance On Stilts are a couple of my favorites. as for me, now rocking out to:

So very true . The versions of the same songs on Absent Lovers are simply smoking hot, and of course leave the studio versions in the dust. However, I think there is no reason whatsoever for the bad press Beat gets.. In my opinion, it's better than Three of a Perfect Pair (whose review you can expect in the next few days ).
