i recently got the Liquid Tension Trio 2 album When the Keyboard Breaks. it kinda got me back into the band. on one hand i was annoyed that they would release this without releasing an official live album, with different cuts of their songs. but the jams were good. so i acquired a live album from 1999 and its awesome.

the first Liquid Trio album was also good, very atmospheric. Tony Levin's bass playing was nothing short of phenomenal.

but of course the first Liquid Tension albums are progressive masterpieces. It always astounded me how well JP, MP, and JR could write music when theyre not concerned about how their fans will react to what they make (cough DT cough)

I rarely listen to it, but it's pretty good stuff. Personally I don't find anyone in the band as a particularly good improv player except Levin who is phenomenal.

I prefer the second disc. I can rarely make it through all of 3 Minute Warning.

Not much complaining from me. I gave both (real) LTE albums 5 stars and they are amongst my favourite acts of all time. Somehow I think they are even better than Dream Theater, at least they suit my taste better. Their third (the trio disc) seems quite poor but I still have to check it out. I was put off a bit by the negative reviews.
A day without prog is a wasted day

I rather enjoy Liquid Tension, but I would have to say that their improvisational skills are pretty weak overall. Three Minute Warning and Spontaneous Combustion are not keepers in my book, though most of the rest of the stuff they did was great. I always like Tony Levin, you know. They do tend toward noodly a bit much sometimes, though.

Righto. I'm about to sell my copy of LTE2 actually. I used to love this stuff when I first got into prog, but as my tastes have shifted, I don't find myself having any desire to listen to them. Certainly it's good music, but it's not groundbreaking or the best of its kind. I like Planet X and Gordian Knot, for example, play better instrumental prog metal. They have a sonic identity and they have an atmospheric identity that is missing from LTE. Also, I do think that the DT boys do some good improv, but it's usually when they're playing live with DT. For example, the guitar solo at the beginning of The Spirit Carries On from the Score DVD is incredibly moving and good. When they jam out in DT it's usually quite entertaining too, though I think it's clear that they are better at writing songs and solos than they are at jamming and improvising.
