Melodic technical metal Chris.. Not too many bands that do that... most are always leaning toward hardcore/metalcore vocal stylings, not cynic...

Well, I can see that they are different and good musicians and all that, but they seem way too mechanical for me. The melodies don't seem to have any feel or emotion behind them (not sure if this is the result or the cause of the vocal effects they use). Their production is pretty flat to me as well.
It's not that it's bad - I can definitely appreciate the quality of the playing and what not, and I would go see them live - but I can't seem to find anything particularly powerful or memorable in their songwriting.

I felt the same way at first but I've grown to love them. They're amazing live too. Full of emotion!

People are talking about Enslaved on the previous page. Educate me on the band, why I might not like them and the albums I would want to hear most.

I tried out Enslaved a couple of weeks ago- I could not get past the vocals for the life of me.

^ Agreed. Although I only just recently got "Vertebrae" and that's really the only album I own of theirs, I can say that the black metal vocals are pretty annoying. I'm just not a fan of that guttural snarly type vocals.
Though you'd probably like that album Hughes.

I've been gradually getting into more metal lately, and most of it is Tech/Extreme: the category out of any on the site that probably gave me the most initial trouble because of my previous hatred for any voice other than typical singing.
My discoveries have been rather hit or miss though. I absolutely love Meshuggah and Gojira, for example, but I've tried Death and Between the Buried and Me several times now and I can't get past the vocals. Opeth was my first tech/extreme band years ago and they remain to this day the band that took me the most persistence to truly enjoy, easily 25+ total spins of various albums. That paved the way for my immediate love of Meshuggah, and my very recent positive reactions to Gojira.
The ones I like are Meshuggah, Gojira, Opeth, and Cynic (though I haven't heard their first album yet). Should I keep trying with Death, BTBAM, and others; will they ever click with me or are there other albums/bands I should check out first?

Though I will be highly disappointed in you if BtBaM doesn't click with you Alex.
Also you need to listen to Protest the Hero - Kezia
if you haven't already.

^What he said. Colors is truly one of the best works of our time. Kezia is a great album too.

I would suggest that you listen to Isa and RUUN. Maybe RUUN first. Grutle´s vocals took me some time to appreciate ( initially I thought he sounded like he vomitted blood or something equally vile, but then again I´m ususally not a fan of classic black metal vocals). I´ve come to appreciate his style though and they have a majestic sound that should please fans of atmospheric and heavy extreme metal ( a bit like a black metal version of Opeth to simplify things). Don´t expect to hear challenging riffs or odd rythm changes though. Enslaved are about dark atmosphere and emotion.

Textures ( Polars) ( I gave their second album a 2 star rating, but have since changed my mind about them and I´m going to write a new review of that album shortly( to redeem myself ).)
Terminal Function ( Measuring the Abstract)
Strapping Young Lad ( the Alien album)
Decapitated ( Organic Hallucinosis)
Atheist ( Unquestionable Presence, Elements)
Sadist ( Tribe)
Pestilence ( Spheres)
Cynic ( Focus). You just gotta have this one. A classic album.
Enslaved ( Isa, RUUN)
Nevermore ( Dead Heart in a Dead world, This Godless Endeavour) I love all their albums but those two are probably their most accessible. No growls in Nevermore but a real vocalist who outshines most other heavy metal vocalists IMO.
Martyr ( Warp Zone, Feeding the Abscess)
Twisted Into Form ( Then Comes Affliction to Awaken the Dreamer)
Spiral Architecht ( A Sceptic´s Universe)
Gorod ( Neurotripsicks, Leading Vision)
Burst ( Prey on Life, Origo)
The Ocean ( Fluxion, Aeolian)
If you´re in the mood to try out something a bit more avant garde I would suggest Dødheimsgaard´s 666 International and Supervillain Outcast .
Which Death albums have you listened to?
I would recommend: Human, Individual Thought Patterns and especially Symbolic.
I hope the list gives you a bit of inspiration.

I´ve followed Nevermore since the Sanctuary days. I remember when their debut album was released. I was blown to pieces. They´ve made much better albums since though. A highly recommedable band IMO. Warrel is one of my favorite vocalists and Loomis is one of my favorite guitarists. They´ve only been to Denmark once ( supporting Disturbed). Needles to say I didn´t go. I didn´t want to pay full price to se 25 minutes of Nevermore.

Enslaved kicks serious ass! One of my favorite BM bands! Isa and Ruun are both high quality albums, but their newest is really bad. They're pretty simple, and tend to focus mostly on lyrics and riffing. I'm not sure what you'd think of them Harry, but if you are able to get past the vocals, you'll probably like them.

Wow, thanks for the rec's! (And no, Harry, I haven't checked out Nevermore because I forgot, but now that I'm actively seeking new metal, I'll have to do that) I'm going to give Colors another try soon (it's the one I'm having the most trouble with), and as for Death: I've heard parts of Symbolic, Human, and the Sound of Perseverance. I can never finish the albums/songs though because of the voice. I also need to try Protest the Hero; I've only heard a few songs on and off so I'm not really familiar with them. Thanks, guys. I'll have to get on this! Hopefully it'll accomplish something.

nice list Umur all are great bands, i haven't heard Terminal Function, Gorod, what are they playing ? @ HughesJB4, try '' Below The Lights'' ; '' Isa'' '' Ruun'' from Enslaved you may like it. see some fans of Nevermore here, so count on me, I love them too, and i enjoyed Protest the Hero' Fortress very much. i see Dødheimsgaard are mentioned above, i tried Supervillain Outcast but doesn't apeal to me , it is demanding listen, maybe i didn't tried hard enough to get into that music, i have intention to try another album from them, they are worth listening. @ MovingPictures07 , i would recomend to you Kathaarsys, great Progressive Black , i simply love them, reminds me of Opeth , they have very lenghty songs, screams, aggression, acoustic parts like opeth, sound great. Dark Suns - this band is HUGE, superb atmosphere , also opeth like passages, love it. Fen , adorable ,progressive black/post rock/ beautful atmosphere, haunting Krallice, Negura Bunget, October Falls, Disillusion, Quo Vadis - superb Prog Death , WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM

I wouldn't recommend anybody to get into growled vocals by listening to Death. I personally went over melodeath, but my appreciation for Schuldiner's growl came much later than my liking of their albums.

I liked Vertebrae. It's not Isa, but it's not quite Watershed either. And Grutle has one monster of a scream, but also some great growls on the Live Retaliation album. Oh, there's another thing I have to say, that is that I can't stay the drumming parts of Gojira's albums. I'm really trying to ignore my distaste and put a spotlight on atmosphere and guitars, which I like, but the drums destroy the songs for me. They're good, I can hear that, but I still can't stand the sound.
