Topic: Suggest New Bands & Artists Divided in Sub-Genres Posted: March 01 2009 at 10:45 |
Now being part of the Heavy Prog Team, which my task is to monitor band's suggestion to Heavy Prog, I was wondering if this couldn't be done a bit more easy, because some suggestions get lost in the way of more suggestions:
Make 1 topic for each sub-genre inside the Suggestions thread, and there it would be much easier to "locate" any suggestion for each sub-genre. Obviously, some can be moved, if they need to. I am aware, that some post a suggestion with more than 1 sub-genre, in mind, this really won't make any difference, just post it in any of the "options" you were thinking of, and then the teams will see.
Pros: It will make the teams much easier to find a suggestion for their specific sub-genre, rather than going to the threads and ask "Hey, for which sub-genre do you feel this band goes to?". Also it would make the "Suggest New Bands & Artists" thread much more "cleaner" and organised, for the best of the teams, and surely for PA members looking for a certain band which was suggested for such sub-genre.
Cons: The already one mentioned before, that people may suggest bands for more than 1 sub-genre, and won't know which sub-genre to pick. Though I think this could easily be fixed by just putting in any of the one 2, or even 3 of the sub-genres he had thought off, and then depending on the teams, it would be moved to the one they think they fit best.
What do you think?

The only problem is the usual one of knowing which sub-genre an artist fits into the best. A lot of people do suggest a genre for their submission, to be honest I'm not sure that this is really necessary.

I think Pablo's idea stems from the fact that, at least lately, many people who suggest new additions indicate a possible subgenre (or more than one) next to the suggestion's name. On a purely personal level, I have found this to be useful, because it provides a sort of pre-screening - I mean, I won't even click on a thread if I see that the band or artists is suggested for addition in Symphonic or Post-Rock. However, it is also true that it is not always easy to decide which subgenre would be the best fit.

I think the whole band addition procedure could be more efficient. See for example how it works in rateyourmusic.com. I don't mean it to be so uncontrolled and incomplete, but there just is too many occasions when the addition doesn't work. (For example Zeuhl band Altaïs - I just can't get enough biography for that band so it could be added. If the additions would be public, some other people could help)
So I don't suggest identic system to RYM, but for example that there would be sections for each genre (and for example one section for artists whose genre is uncertain) and free corrections, adding information and discussion, also free voting (Well, I'm not sure how those prog addition teams work... do they vote?), and some modificator can add the artist when it feels everything is fine.

OK, guys... I don't know how additions work on Rateyourmusic, but here the times when a band was added without any information are long gone. We genre team members take our work (which we do for free) very seriously, and this means hunting high and low for information on the more obscure bands. If the info we get is not a whole lot, we use what we have, and hope to be able to find something more in the future.
@ Progressive: I don't understand what you mean for 'public' additions. Could you please be so kind as to explain? As regards the way genre teams work - yes, we do vote, and no addition gets through without hearing all of the team members' opinion.

Pablo, perhaps you're not aware, but this is one of the main responsibilities of the Site Monitors: they are supposed to monitor the suggest new artists threads, try to find out the targeted sub-genre, and re-post the link to the thread in the appropriate genre team thread. They can also "shop" the band around if there's more than one sub that might be a good fit, and follow up with the team(s) and keep the original suggester up to date on the progress of the proposal.

(don't hurt me, I'm just the messenger)

Yeah, that's what I said, Raff has told me to contribute, monitoring the Suggestion thread, and that's why this "issue". I mean, it makes it so much easier, and better.

I guess my point was ideally the site monitors should take care of the "sorting" - but indeed sometimes things fall through the cracks. I think your suggestion is pretty good, actually.

No one will hurt you, you're under my protection .... Seriously, though, there are threads dedicated to finding information for missing bios, and these threads are stickied. Without meaning to be confrontational, I believe that people should get a bit more familiar with all the forum functions, so that they can offer their contribution and not feel left out. We Collabs are not a secret society that never accepts the input of 'outsiders'.
