My suggestion of the 21st Century Schizoid Band can be shot down on 2 counts. Firstly, they no longer exist, due to the death of drummer Ian Wallace, and secondly - the line-up consisted of 4 ex-Crimsoids (plus an ex-Level 42 guitarist to duplicate the Fripp role) and they played KC music that at least one member had played either live or on disc. I saw them in London in late October 2003 and they were superb. They did note-for-note covers of everything from ITCOTCK to Islands, plus 'Starless' on Red and a couple of things related to solo projects.

I am one of only about 1,800 people in the world with an original M400 Mellotron!

Nice to see someone else focusing on what was an extraordinary ensemble of what I have described in other forums from time to time as prog legends.

The debate has raged on whether they are a tribute band or perhaps a varied incarnation of the original . To suggest the latter, of course, tends to upset the staunch Frippofiles among us. Certainly, with the exception of Jakko Jakszyk, they have all been members of the movable feast that was the earlier KC. Also, from what I have read, it seems Mr. Fripp was very supportive of this project and the late and great Ian Wallace offshoot ' The Crimson Jazz Trio ' [ CJ3 ].

I subscribe to the view that Jakko who has more recently made valuable contributions to ' The Tangent ', [ and who has released a double album of wonderful Canterbury music ] handled guitar and vocals extremely well , given that he had such enormous shoes to try and fill, doing lead vocals to boot.

Lucky you for having seen them live . The best I have is the ' Live in Japan ' DVD which I really enjoy because I believe the likes of Collins and MacDonald have improved with age . Their work on woodwinds in particular is A grade to say the least .

Tribute band or not, people who hanker for the earlier jazz laced KC material and who can overcome these alumni having the affrontery of reworking these classics in the absence of RF, should just get into them .

It's a real shame they could not hold it together . The untimely loss of IW has not helped and it underlines the significance of a band like this . None of us is getting younger and reunion bands such as this should be cherished for what they are before its too late.

I saw them at the Canterbury Festival in 2001 (I think) & they were an excellent live band - good selection of material from the glory days (even played 'Cat Food') & finishing with a storming version of Epitaph.

Glad I got to see them

I saw them at the Canterbury Festival too (different year) - great set, great band - I wouldn't call them a tribute band any more than I would the current Focus line-up Wink
What?

Well I'm glad that someone has approved of something I've said. Must be a first!!!Big smile
When I first heard the band name, I smelt a rat, as, in my experience, "Tribute Bands" translate as s**te copyists with no fresh ideas of their own. This thinking is usually shot down when I was told that a Swedish band (Anglagard or Anekdoten - can't remember which) started out as Crimson cover merchants, but developed a style of their own. However, a good man (the custodian of www.planetmellotron.com to be name-droppingly accurate!) corrected me, telling me that 21CSB were 80% ex-Crimson. The fact that they were playing old stuff (albeit stuff that at least one of them was DIRECTLY connected with) means that they were playing it as a tribute - is that a valid arguement? If they're NOT a Tribute band, then what are they? Anyway, I saw them at the London Astoria on 31/10/2003 - probably there last gig in the UK - they were superb. A good set list, ranging from stuff on INTOTCK, ITWOP, Lizard, Islands and Red (Collins and McDonald did sax sessions on "Starless" - God, that was magnifcent! The 2nd best gig of ALL time>

I agree. When you have such a complement of original/past band members, is it really a tribute band ? At least some of them had a hand in writing the material they played as I understand it. This is certainly not true of most tribute bands .

However, I know others here will only ever treat them as a tribute band which I find a little insulting to the likes of Collins/ MacDonald/Giles/Giles and Wallace.

Anyway, this thread gives us the opportunity of celebrating all that was exceptional about them.

P.S. If you're into Jazz trios , CRIMSON JAZZ TRIOs [ CJ3 ] arrangements of some KC classics into a jazz trio format, thanks to the late Ian Wallace on drums, is amazing . To hear some of your favourite KC melodies woven into the improvisational force that is jazz and played by 3 top musicians is a great experience imo. It works so well because the original tunes were well written and capable of such adaptions. CJ3 is here on PA if you're interested. Wonderful mood music .

They`re more Crimson than the current Crimson wherever it is right now. The future of The Crimson Jazz Trio is still up in the air as Wallace was part of that as well. It even got Bob`s stamp of approval on the CD liner notes.

It will probably please you fans of this fine band that I'm working on the addition of guitarist Jakko Jakszyk, whose album The Bruised Romantic Glee Club (which Mrgd kindly mentionedThumbs Up) is a real masterpiece of Canterbury music, 21-century style.

Jakko Jakszyk has been around the block several times, and indeed married into Crimson -Mrs Jakko Jakszyk is Mike Giles' daughter. If you haven't discovered 64 Spoons (jazz rock group with the misfortune to be formed at the height of punk) it's about time you did. Jakko is one of those rarities who got guitar lessons from Allan Holdworth. Worked with various members of Canterbury scene (e.g. Rapid Eye Movement with Dave Stewart - and there may yet be a release from that band, Pip Pyle albums), Henry Cow, Japan (check out the CD ep Kingdom Of Dust) - and the aforementioned Bruised Romantic Glee Club has a varitable whos who of the British prog rock scene (shame the record label went bust, making CDs difficult to find). 21st Century Schizoid Band came  about and survived because of Jakko due to his commitment and underwriting it. And next one of those supermarket ads appears on TV, there's a possibility Jakko wrote the incidental music (i.e. following in the footsteps of Manfred Mann, Mike Ratledge etc.).

Hope Jakko's biographer is taking note. And BTW I believe I made that reference to Anekdoten being a Crimson cover band before releasing Vermod - nobody else found the demo tapes yet?

I would agree and suggest Jakko is the best person to provide the complex story. I started to write a potted biog  some  time ago, waiting for requested  input from Jakko, but came to a halt . For somebody who's normally communicative  nothing came, although I strongly suspect he had better things on his mind, like moving house, a failing record label (Iceni)  and I also guess he gets a tad embarrassed by this sort of attention. Perhaps time for a reminder?Jakko has guested on my radio show twiceand provided a heap of recordings, including working progress Rapid Eye Movement recordings

BTW Jakko also writes musical documentaries for BBC Radio 3 - Road To Ballina has been transcribed to CD.

Thank goodness two such well informed correspondents as Raff and Dick are putting this entry of Jakko together . He thoroughly deserves to be here if not for ' The Bruised Romantic Glee Club ' alone , but of course, his pedigree and influence extend far beyond this great release.

He also seems to have time to respond to fans . [ He personally responded to a query I sent to him through his website about the possibilty of the CJ3 Volume II of the KC Songbook being released , given that it was well advanced and in fact very nearly finished , at least as far as recording was concerned ,at the time of IWs sad passing . He indicated that he thought it would be completed and released but, of course, he could not say when].

His website has not been updated for some time either so he must be otherwise occupied. I'm sure the two of you could well do justice to a bio for him . It seems to me to be important that he is included as soon as reasonably possible to help him get further exposure which his work so richly deserves imo.
