Thanks, I will do that, when I think of something more adequate to say.
Apparently somebody was not impressed with my story about 'Wish you were here' frightening deer.

I think we should add some sort of coding that states (up until the release date of the album, after which the page will return to the normal reviewing process):
If you would like the review this album before its release date, send a PM to ______ stating your legitimacy as a promotional reviewer.
Unitl the release date, no one but the approved people should be able to review or rate albums.

I agree. Then you won't end up with stuff like this: http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=6701 How likely is it that a single person has listened to over FIVE THOUSAND prog albums even once? If this person listened to each of the albums s/he reviewed only ONCE, it would still take two and a half years at eight hours a day! Perhaps the person is a DJ - that's the only conceivable way they might have racked up that many albums. And you'd hope s/he'd listened to them many more times than once. And not one single review! Perhaps the worst case or rating abuse I've seen. |

Re : collab ID 6701 -
1) 5000 albums is not that out of reach. I own some 2000 CDs. Many are compilations made up of 2 albums per CD, in some cases 1 or a few songs left off the album(s) that I didn't like; while others are basically anthologies. I've bought, sold, traded, borrowed, lent, burnt & had copies burnt. The "best of" ones in my collection were time consuming and sometimes costly (Tull & Crimson's out put being rather large), but I did give each album more than one good listen before deciding which songs I kept. On top of that, over the 30 years that I have been buying music, I've disposed of a good 500 albums. Some were sold/traded because of the above process, some I simply didn't want anymore. Example - Purple's gig with the Philharmonic, the Rush live albums after The whole worlds a stage, and some that I eventually did not like that I transferred to mix cassettes/CDs the songs I liked. I do hope that any review is based on more than a single passing listen. I do wonder though how some of the 1000 album plus reviewers (not just raters) are able to give appropriate time to ensure each album gets a decent listen. Reason - I am at a point, or rather have been for a while, where I cannot honestly claim to know ALL or MOST of my albums inside out. The older or more popular ones I can. More recent purchases, though, while enjoying regular play, I can only state that I love the music, but could not from memory name most songs individually. Heck, even a few Gentle Giant, Ange, and Motorhead albums form part of this group. And yes, s few of those are among my favourites (GG's first, Ange' Seve QUi Peut, Mo'head's INferno) So, I would question not just this particular person, but some others here who manage prodigious amounts of reviews. But then, hey, who knows, maybe they have put in that much time. But maybe not, eh. |

what? that's not abuse ;P drain-o's ratings have been useful to me before. and just because you review in a way that takes up a lot of time doesn't mean that everyone else should.
I'd just like to remind everyone that "abuse" is not "using the site in a different way to mine". =P =P =P |

Fair play, laplace, I don't have any complaint if other people find this 'rating without review' useful. You're the first to say so.
I'm not calling his/her tastes into question. I'm arguing that it must have been difficult to rate 5000+ albums over an 18-month period (the gap between his/her enrolment and last visit) as it would have taken over two years, at eight hours per day, just to listen to 5000 albums once each. I have over 2000 albums, about half of which are prog or related. I try to review one per day, but life gets in the way. If it's an album I'm familiar with I may only listen to it once (while I'm writing the review), but new albums need five or more spins before I feel confident enough to write about them. I can certainly understand other people being much more decisive in their musical tastes and being able to review a new album after one listen. That's not 'abuse'. I can't, though: too many times my opinion of an album has changed after a few listens. However, I could have spent an afternoon rating my entire collection. Does anyone think that would have been of more use? Or do we think it OK to rate albums without listening to them? If this user rated albums without listening to them, that would, to my mind, be 'abuse'. And because there is no accompanying review, surely that suspicion must remain. |

As I can recall Drain-O lives alone in the remote Bouvet Island (South Atlantic)... maybe his only amusement is to hear prog albums, no?

Indeed! And perhaps he might struggle to express himself to his own satisfaction in English. It's a shame, though. I would like to know the thoughts of someone with such a broad musical palette.
'Abuse' accusation withdrawn. Russell mollified. |

For a reference point, I can assure you that NO review copies have gone out, or will indeed go out other than to 2 trusted magazine reviwers. The earliest copies available to people will be 20th/21st Sept at the launch weekend. Any ratings/"reviews" prior to that time (at the earliest) are simply blarney!
Thanks to Yorkie X for spotting that, I'm trying to check it each day now that the album has been listed, but a small matter of production workload means it's not always possible!
Please pass on names for raters or reviewers prior to this time, I am sure the BPI will find their details interesting!

I don't know why people would do that. If everyone that hated Genesis did that SEBTP would have a 2 star average. Good job pointing that out.

Hehe, I was wondering, after seeing the album review in the weekly PA feed, that the album shouldn't be out yet, at least as far as I know. This seems to explain some of it. Edited by Passionist - February 03 2009 at 15:51 |

^Which brings up the point, if the album hasn't even been released, surely a Progreviewer would be more responsible to even add an album with the potential for ratings abuse?
I would never add an album that isn't legally available and I think that should be the case for all members of the site. |

M@x is keen to ensure that information about albums, especially popular ones, is listed as soon as it is made public.
The info for the album has now been updated making it clear that ratings only and reviews not based on official promo copies will be deleted.
