a friend of mine went and told me after. I didn't even know they were coming! I would have loved to interview them too.

Their early stuff wasn't proggy... get Leviathan or their newest. Or just wait until later this year and get their yet unreleased album. ;)

You just heard the wrong tune perhaps.
Give Blood Mountain a good shot, because that is their best so far IMO and the one that seriously turned me onto Mastodon.

So... I just got back from Gigan, Warscythe, and Book of Black Earth. Cattle Decapitation and Psyoptic were also playing but I left before they went on. I met all of the bands and gave them my card etc. Gigan was really ecstatic to have a fan. LOL I was weirdly the only one in the audience who seemed the least bit interested in their music. (meh... I guess prog/tech/abstract metal doesn't really appeal to people who are into friggin grindcore) I talked with the lead guitarist/song writer and drummer for a while and then they took a picture of me with the guitarist. Tongue I wonder if it'll show up on their myspace or something. LOL They're pretty much as close as I'll ever be to seeing DSO live. They sound pretty similar, especially when played live. Their guitarist has one of the most original techniques I've ever seen. He also used a theramin which is really cool. Their bassist is hot... but she was sort of stand offish and the least friendly person in the band. Oh, and I bought their debut EP which I didn't have. They played all of the songs on it.

Holy sh*t! My DSO vinyl just came... it sounds absolutely amazing. I've heard a lot of CD -> Vinyl adaptations that sound much worse than the CD but this sounds much better. Amazing depth, an excellent listening experience! Highly recommended!

Gojira hasn't really done it for me yet... I bought From Mars To Sirius t'other day and it didn't really impress me. I suppose I just have to listen to it w few times.

Put it in the car for 3 weeks... if after 3 weeks they still have it done it for you then maybe you won't like them.  But if they come to town see them live just to be safe!

I just wanted to say that one of the most impressive releases of '08 in this category would have to be:

Terminal Function:  Measuring the abstract...

not is the playing superb;  with awesome rhythms in the instrumentation that twist and turn with surprising and jolting time changes and rhythmic complexities, but also the solos/leads are the best I have heard all year....Very jazz influenced- specifically Holdsworthian.... with great compositional dexterity.  Also noteworthy are the keys, which are used more for textural and ambient touches than leads, although they do shine through as a lead instrument occasionally.  But the main reason I like this album so much is that it has actual *memorable* songs, that have exceptional dynamic range, by way of slower parts, clean singing to counter the growls, more depth and feeling in the playing...... I find that these are all elements that a LOT of tech bands lack.  For instance, the latest The Faceless album, while virtuosity-laden in its playing- turns into an unmemorable shredfest with very little emotional content.  And their growls are absolutely horrid.  I guess overall I have a love/hate relationship with this sub-genre of metal..... I am very picky about who I love and endorse- with good reason- and as we see this growing into an ever-more-popular sub-genre, we will see the genre getting watered down..... lots of tasteless and worthless shred out there.  People need to take lessons from such bands as Martyr or Gorguts- where they were not only technical, but also have interesting playing with not only tasteful licks, but also feeling and emotion..... Just like the great Jason Becker- one of the best "shredders" ever to grace us with his music....Now tragically a victim of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS)...

so rant over.
