What's wrong with trying to sound indie? You have to sound something, right?

Maybe they (Interpol, Editors, The National, etc.) don't have the most original sound ever, but unlike most "generic indie-pop" bands, they make interesting songs. |
I do like The National though. Didn't get a chance to get into them much deeply, but I've liked what I heard so far.
And actually, I will found out tomorrow if Anthony And The Johnsons is the greatest band of the 00s (new album coming out, yoo-hee!). I'll be picking up Animal Collective's new as well (that's assuming the record store has it, dang it), and I heard good things about it.

Pop trying to sound indie. |
Yes, that was partly what I was talking about. Pop trying to sound indie.......well, what does that mean? Indie is comprised of about 10 or more genres, so when you say "indie trying to sound like pop' it's just confusing, because it could be indie trying to sound like any one of those genres, so in the end, it doesn't really give a clear indication of what it sounds like at all.

Yes, but in some mysterious ways, I think music should not try to sound like anything. It should simply BE. And they should not try to sound like anything else.

I just stuck to the sound it sort of had when I first started hearing it. I know that by definition, indie means released on an independant label, but unless someone can come up with a better term to refer to to the sound bands like Keane, Interpol, etc, etc have, I'll have to stick to "indie-pop".
Post-90s-alt?

See? To me, post-punk is the Birthday Party (and happened during the 80s).
Nobody ever agrees on these things anyway.
edit: wait, I looked it up on trusted (*cough-cough*) wikipedia, and it appears there's such a thing as "post-punk revival" and I can live with that...

I've heard of the term "post-punk revival", but in my opinion "neo-post-punk" would be much cooler.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a band choosing to be a particular genre. I believe placing boundaries/rules on your music is also the key to breaking them down simultaneously. Focusing on a few things you're really good at, rather than trying to a jack of all trades and master of none, can often make for better music IMO.

Post Punk came about in the 70s really (I know this stuff, I used to read books on this kinda stuff:P). When it comes to punk, I'm a post hardcore whore anyway, I listen to that particular sub genre more than any other punk genre.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind neo too much either, makes sense, since most "neo" genres do have a more pop side that to me fits the scheme of these bands. And "revival" doesn't really necessitates (again, in my opinion) such big changes to what the original artists were doing. Like Green Day (etc) simply copying (debatable, I guess) The Clash and the likes.

How is post hardcore different from hardcore? There's more than two chords?

Well, I can barely stand to listen to most hardcore, but I listen to Post Hardcore daily. The level of musicianship is a lot higher on average, relying less on being purely loud and fast and depending on the band, some are fairly experimental and sometimes bands are full blown progressive/post hardcore (there are a few progressive post hardcore bands listed on PA I believe).

Dang, I wanted to go to bed early... Get up at five and got this dumbass labor union tomorrow night that I just know it's not going to end before 11. And for once, nobody on here is talking about Star Wars, Henry Cow or D&D...
edit: all right, come to think of it, I got this new Tom Waits bio I want to read a little more too. Good night boys, nice chatting with ya!

Well, going to bed or not? Well, I prefer to shy away from the usual overdone topics here anyway. I still have never heard Henry Cow
