Breaks my heart, it does.

11 years old, looking after his kid sister?
Christ, that is screwed up:(

Another student knows he's going to jail in a few weeks...it's just bad.  These kids didn't have a f**king chance.

I'm there to give them one.

Kids going to jail, christ.
I'm so glad now I avoided that kind of crowd in high school, but if I could go back again now, I would have even just avoided the kids that drank alcohol and didn't do their homework I guess.
I nearly got my throat slit by some dude that was high off his head on MDMA, Speed, weed and alcohol all at once in 2007, who was due for jail a few months after for crimes he had committed in the last few years and he said he would have killed someone because he just didn't care anymore. He must have been, about 20 years old at the most.
It's scary seeing kids turn out like that.

I don't think there's much in there that's of interest to people already into prog (well, most are bands you already know), but you might find some bands of interest.

Dean guitars has decided to make a signature amp in his name.
He already has a signature amp with Krank Amplification, which at least he got to design and approve while he was still alive, but NOOOOOOO, Dean have to go and make another goddamn Dimebag signature thing.
After Dimebag died, Dean decided they 'needed' 33 variations of his signature guitar.
WTF is that, seriously? Why the hell do you need 33 variations of the same guitar, christ sakeAngry
I hate Dean Guitars so much now, because of how much they have tarnished Dimebag's name.
In fact, the original founder of Dean Guitars himself, Dean Zelinsky, left Dean Guitars because he didn't like their business practices.
When the guitar that gave the company it's name leaves the company, that's seriously telling you something about what the brand turned intoDisapprove

Sorry June...

Anyway, the kids are between around 11 and 18.  One girl doesn't even have groceries.  Another boy has no clothes.  Literally.

And I want to help.  What good does teaching them what a noun or integer is if they're dead in a ditch?

And Journey should not be here.  My opinion.  No one has proved me wrong about that (not even Ivan).

Don't think they ever made a Kerry Livgren sig. guitar, even though Livgren used them for years.

One of my schools has that kind of milieu. Very hard on your heart at first, but if you can create a relationship with these kids, that's when you really know your job is worth doing.

Signature guitars are made because they will sell in nearly all cases.
Face it, what 14 year old kid knows who Kerry Livgren is? And hence, no signature guitar for himWink
A few companies do endorse also based on brand loyalty fortunately, like some small to medium size custom shop makers. I know Jackson's guitars at least has the integrity to reward loyal players with an endorsement deal and custom guitars, but always necessarily signature guitars unless they are dead certain it will sell like hotcakes.
Doesn't matter the level of talent, you can put some pop punk's name on a guitar,a  guy that can barely play 3 chords correctly, and if it sells, he gets a signature guitar.
Meanwhile, you never hear of jazz fusion players, guys with almighty talent, getting sig guitars sadlyDisapprove (A few exceptions of course, but for the most part, fusion guys are really ignored).

That's goddamn right.

I've seen so many new teachers go in and just try to teach the curriculum...

I spend the first 15-20 minutes of my initial classes just getting to know the kids.  Letting them crack on me, cracking back, letting me know what they like to do, telling them interesting things.

Yeah, it may "waste" a day, but you win the rest of the year when they know you actually give a damn.

Yeah, I get what you mean, it's real rough. Some kids really do have more pressing issues than just their education as the main priority.
Some kids can't get out of bed in the morning due to mental illness, just things like that that go beyond just merely making sure they are educated, that people often overlook.

Gotta disagree there.  Parker.  Fender.

Just two examples off the top of my head that have a plethora of signature guitars.  I think it's a shame really, that some brands do exactly what you describe.  I just don't think it has to be that way.  There are too many serious players out there.

Agreed. I'm afraid to say I learned that the hard way during my first year of teaching (oh, the things they forgot to tell you during your studies). I'm not very social to start with and in the "real world", I'm usually the person who always says the wrong thing and I avoids that problem by shutting up, so I had to work hard on my social skills since I started teaching. But I'm now much more happier going into class nowadays and it has very more improved the amount of things I can actually get into my students' heads.
