See ya Melissa. I like debut a lot, but it's honestly not my favorite. My list goes a bit like 1. Bedlam - 10/10 2. De-loused - 9.5/10 3. Amputechture - 8.5/10 or 9/10 4. Frances - 8/10 I guess I'm a big fan so to say.

I've only heard Bedlam a couple of times. It's not even on my iPod - what the hell? Guess I never ripped the CD...

Quite honestly I got into The Mars Volta around the time Bedlam came out about a year ago and it was the one that probably hit me the hardest and stuck with me the most. I think once it caught on I listened to it 2 or 3 times a day pretty frequently. Speaking of things catching on, normally Canterbury isn't my preferred prog genre except for my undying obsession over Gong , but lately Hatfield's been catching on to me more and more. Although I think the debut is slightly better than Rotters.

That plays a big role sometimes - Deloused was my first exposure. Though I think Bedlam is their second best, I thought it was a strong effort from them after what was for me a bit of a disappointment in Amputechture.

That's cool - it's hard for me to choose, but I also think I prefer the debut slightly. More Northettes on that one. If you end up really liking Hatfield, National Health is the logical best step.

Something about their noiserock approach hurts my head.
not much is up - just posted a new review, finished that freaking video that I was working on and now I'm listening to Meshuggah, waiting for the girlfriend to get home and prepping to draft another review. Talking to prof on the side and going to leave for work at 6
and j00?

I have about 30 pages to read for school tomorrow, so not too bad. Right now I'm working on a review that I've been putting off for awhile and chillaxing.

If I think avant, what's the first artist that I think of? Zappa. Moving him would be like putting Rush in Prog Related because of their 90s albums.
|
He's not the first artist I think of though.

"Elitest Avant Proggers"
I don't think it would be a good move. Like I said, he's one of the founders of the genre, why move him?
|
I thought it might be that one but I don't see how it has anything to do with FZ.
Because he encompasses much more than that genre and his other albums mislead people into thinking the genre is something it's not. |
^^^You just continued to prove my point. Now not even Frank Zappa is avant enough to stay in the sub.

Is proto-prog prog? Is King Crimson in Symphonic?

No, but did Krimso start Symphonic? Hell no. Is "Court Of The Crimson
King" symphonic? No. Did we move Genesis to Neo or Xover because of
...Then There Were Three... or Abacab? No. Edit - why did this post fail so hard? |
Yes Krimso did start off as Symphonic. Even Pete Sinfield said so.

James - we're not going to add Madonna, so stop asking. By the way, you should watch the video I posted on the last page

I have to go with James on this one. When I think avant, I think Henry Cow, Art Bears, Samla Mammas Manna, etc etc. Zappa does have some avant albums, but he also has some jazz fusion ones and some (probably) eclectic ones. Quite honestly though, I think leaving him where he is is perfectly fine. If he ended up getting moved to a different genre, the arguments about what genre to put him in would create a sh*tstorm IMO.

Alright folks. The landlord called and we have outlived are welcome in these facilities once again. Would someone do the honor of relocating us to Shred Room #3?

Mike, I've never heard a single Zappa or Mothers album. Therefore he is not entry level.
If anything, I think Mr. Bungle or Fantomas are more entry level for modern listeners to avant-garde music.
But they're not really representative of the avant-garde sound either.
I still think maybe we should have:
RIO/RIO-orientated Avant-prog
That would separate lots of stuff and allow albums to climb up the charts.

Well, that's your call - it's not my sub.
I just don't think he should be moved.
So who's making Shred 3?

Sometimes I wish we could have a separate sub for chamber prog.

There's no reason to start a new Shred Room yet... this one isn't even slowing down. Besides, it's 300 pages now, I believe. Maybe even more.
