If you've seen the film of the Rome gig, you'll see that you didn't miss much... bearing in mind this was an official Genesis release, they didn't exactly pull out the stops to play a great show & on the few occasions they played any pre-1980 material, it was played so slowly & (to be honest) so poorly, you got the impression Collins/Rutherford/Banks are either just fed up of the older stuff, or unable to do it justice any more.

On the evidence of the Rome gig then, even if Gabriel/Hackett were to go for a full reunion, I'd be reticent about paying the ticket price until I'd seen some proof the gig would actually be worth seeing... and bear in mind this is from someone who would give his right dangler (and sell the rights on the other one) to have seen the classic line-up, and hate my brother-in-law for having seen them two nights running on the 'Selling England' tour

These rumours have been on & off for so long though (to be honest, ever since they played the one off reunuion in 1983), I tend to bow to mpomy's wisdom:

Well Jimmy boy I think that you hit the proverbial nail on the head there. They certainly didn`t pull out the stops. The Rome show is a very good "Exhibit A ". If you watch the whole thing you get the impression that they were only playing the older stuff because they had to satisfy grumpy old fans of the older material that were going to show up. I think theonly pre-1978 material that worked were Ripples ( and Phil even pops this one up at especially at the end)) and Los Endos because they had previously been played in large stadiums. The pre LLDOB material was mostly presented in more intimate venues and just won`t work in front of 80,000 people with the full theatrics. As I said on another thread when I saw them at the Olympic Stadium in Montréal in summer of `07 they looked like ants and the video on the big screen wasn`t in sync with the music from most parts of the stadium. Can you imagine what Gabriel would look like. He`d look like a gnat. The whole point of the theatrics would be lost. I`ve seen The Musical Box a couple of times at The Bell Centre ( where the Montréal Canadiens play ) and they always put them in the smaller theatre. Besides, I can`t see  Peter Gabriel as a 59 year old man dressing up as Fruit of The Loom or a cross-dressing Fox.
Finally, this just an observation from the Montréal show I attended. And I think the set list was very similar to the When In Rome DVD show. Whenever they played the older stuff I noticed that the younger people in the audience ( ie in their twenties ) were confused and sort of didn`t really know what was going on. But when they played a newer track from the eighties such as Home By The Sea they would go beserk. Just a first hand observation.
I still say it no going to happen.
The musical Box is doing Trick of The Tail. I MIGHT go and see that depending on how my arm is twisted.

Yeah, I just have this feeling that watching them try to pull off the old stuff would be analogous to going to "Old Timers Day" at the baseball field. You might be able to convince Mays and Aaron to come out for a few bucks, but nobodies hitting anything out of the park.  To be honest, I would rather see some young, unspoiled performers do a Genesis tribute than see the codgers muck about overproduced renditions of their history.

I take your point on venue sizes for older material; however, in 1978 when they were still performing large chunks of the older albums, they were playing huge venues - they just changed the presentation - the songs themselves do work in large venues, it's just the intimate stage shows they used to play in the glory days would be completely lost in an enormodrome (which is where, face it, they'd have to play). The Milton Keynes reunion in 1983 was before an audience of (this is a guess btw) about 50/60,000; nothing post 1975 was played, yet they pulled it off because they adapted the show itself.

No - in my humble opinion & on the evidence of 'Seconds Out' & a recording I have of the 1978 Knebworth show (in front of over 100,000 people) the songs could work if (and unfortunately, this is a big if) they were played well, which on the evidence of the Rome film...

Of course - the absolute ideal would be to see the re-unified Genesis in a small 2/3,000 seat theatre, but that's never going to happen so for a recreation of the glory days, I'll just wait for The Musical Box to come round again - great band, great musicians, perfect recreation of pre-1975 Genesis (even the Mellotron broke down briefly when I saw them - how authentic is that? )

This has to be one of the most tedious recurring threads ever!

Would anyone really want to see five grumpy old men trying to relive past glories!

It would be embarrasing!

Being an average Genesis fan, I must ask why Hackett couldn't stand playing with Banks again ?
Was Banks the hatchet man ?

Me too, did they not get along or what? I haven't heard anything about that.

IF they did have a reunion and IF they came to Michigan and IF I was able to go I wouldn't miss it, but thats a lot of ifs. Being born in the MI, USA doesn't place you too close to many good prog bands, although the Trans-Siberian Orchestra always stops at the Van Andel arena.

Possible as long as everyone is still alive.  Desirable is another matter.  Hackett and Gabriel are still making good new music on their own.  While the other three...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I saw Steve Hackett perform as part of an acoustic trio alongside his brother and someone else. It was a really small venue (no more than 200 seats or so) so he talked with the audience for a bit between songs and at the end. He seemed like a really nice guy and when Genesis inevitably got brought up, he said he would reunite as long as Peter was also willing.
