no particular order and sticking to Prog since this is not the general music forum:
Zappa
Ian Anderson
Peter Sinfield
Roger Waters (pre Final Cut)
Dave Cousins
Tony Hill (High Tide)
Jon Anderson
would like to list more but for some reason "vocals by" never seems to be listed with songs, anywhere.  Does anyone know of a website that has a lyrics database that lists their writer?

Not sure if John´s written more than Learning to live for DT
but that´s for sure one of their best lyrical compositions.

For a real, real favourite: Mr. Hammill. He uses to write songs with
moods and situations I can personally identificate
The water rushes over all
cities crash in the mighty wave;
the final man is very small,
plunging in for his final bathe

I'm not a big fan of lyrics, but some which I enjoy are Peter Gabriel(on Genesis), Waters/Gilmour(Floyd), Zappa and some others.

My definite favourite must be Peter Hammill. But there are several others I appreciate too, most notably Olle Törnvall of Trettioåriga kriget and Henrik Franzén of 22 för många (which isn't a prog band, but I guess it's alright to mention them anyway).

Hammill is my favourite, but there are many other good ones that have not been mentioned yet, especially Robert Calvert and Peter Blegvad.
Daevid Allen is a bit underestimated because people think he only writes lyrics about flying teapots and pot-head pixies. Very wrong! His lyrics are almost always very witty and sometimes even deep.

Hammill Hammill Hammill

others also of course but i'll just mention him as he's considerably higher than the rest.
