Ok, the basic idea here is to identify the greatest Zappa album from each decade then to take the winners and pit them against each other in a final mind boggling, mustache twirling battle royal.  Each poll will include both studio and live releases and there will be five polls: "the 60s", "the 70s", "the 80s", "the 90s (including posthumous)", and "the 2000s (all posthumous)".  Any excuse for more Zappa in the forums, I say! Hot Rats takes "the 60s"  by 4 votes over We're Only In It For The Money, which fought the good fight.  This week it is up to you to decide "the 70s", a lot of meat here, dig in.  You will be granted a weeks worth of time to decide.

Results:
"the 60s": Hot Rats (1969)

Shouldn't Joe's Garage just be one option, since it's all one album? If so, I'd go for that, despite the hard decision.

I think you should have divided the 70's into 2 polls. There are LOTS of classics. Though my favorite is definitely Roxy & Elsewhere.

#1 Roxy & Elsewhere
#2 Zappa in New York
#3 Grand Wazoo
#4 Over-nite Sensation
#5 Zoot Allures
#6 Waka/Jawaka
#7 One Size Fits All
#8 Apostrophe and Joe's Garage
#9 Studio Tan (the only track I listen to is RDNZL, but it's AWESOME)
#10 Sheik Yerbouti

I haven't heard Chunga's Revenge in it's entirety neither Sleep Dirt or Bongo's Fury.

Man this is tough, I love all of these albums. They all have gems but I have to say that I think One Size Fits All is the most consistently amazing from start to finish. Not a single weak track. Arf, she said.

One Size Fits All just barely nudges Roxy out of the number one slot, but my goodness if those two don't make an incredible combo...

One Size Fits All.  Best FZ album ever for me.  The '70s were a very good decade for FZ.  The Flo & Eddie years are the low point, but even those albums have some great music on them.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me

That is true.

Despite how good One Size Fits All is, Joe's Garage just has something extra which makes it my favorite Zappa album ever (besides Hot Rats). The mix of sheer emotional content, the perfect balance between humor and a deeply-hidden serious message, the instrumentation... it all hits a paramount on that album in a way that is just mind-blowing.

Not easy at all. This is my favourite Zappa decade. ONE SIZE is undoubtedly his most all-encompassing SYMPHONIC ROCK masterpiece. I love the bright sound of WAZOO, and IN N.Y. always puts me in a good mood. SHEIK YERBOUTI was probably the first Zappa album I really enjoyed. But when all is said and done, they're all beaten by ROXY AND ELSEWHERE, probably the most glorious, the most exciting and versatile live album on the entire Prog Archives! You thought YESSONGS, SECONDS OUT or BURSTING OUT were multi-coloured, virtuosic extravaganzas? Think again.

I find Joe's lacking something.   Not that it's a bad album -- quite the contrary -- but the whole Central Scrutinizer conceit to hold it all together is kinda lame to these ears.

^I agree and disagree. I like to hear the Central scrutinizer speeches humorous as well as a guide to the concept, even if they're quite spooky or annoying. Of course as a album to listen just to the music and not the lyrics/concept then I agree. But when you want to listen to the whole story as The Wall or Tommy, etc, etc, then it doesn't mind. At least for me.
