I am wondering, whether Eclectic Prog and Art Rock are the same thing?

PA-wise, the former Art-Rock category now consists of Eclectic, Crossover and Heavy Prog.

He, this is something I have wanted to know because I was out of the loop for about a year and when I came back I found art rock has disappeared. I understand adding new genres but why was art rock removed as a category altogether? More a superficial rather than musical descriptor, perhaps?

It was removed, or rather split three-ways, because it had become unmanageable - over 400 bands going from The Moody Blues to The Mars Volta. Until the fall of 2006, there wasn't even an Art Rock team - Micky and I founded it, and then asked other people to join. Then, in the summer of 2007, the split happened, not before the new categories were thoroughly and carefully discussed. I know that some forum members are still not too happy with our decision, but you can be sure about one thing - it was not taken lightly, and it was taken with everyone's best interests in mind.

Fair enough. I just wanted to know the reasons and I was sure there would be just reasons for such a major change.

For answering the initial thread question I would say NO because eclectic prog is a portion of art rock

On the other hand, "art rock" is an old musical label, created and used years before the creation of the PA site.

Yes, but the label could have been applied to so many things, not to mention the hundred of bands that were present in the old genre. Many bands, many styles, and just the "art rock" label - something had to be done. So we came up with the minimum set of new, logical categories. Eclectic Prog isn't what Art Rock was, but, if there's a real wish for a bit of theory, Eclectic Prog is closest to what the old Art Rock was, because it keeps that "multi-styled" particularity that was allowed (but provoked the huge pile-up) in Art Rock. Bands in Heavy Prog tend most to orientate around a new label - the "heavy" one, of course - while Crossover will always be thinked as "progressive + mainstream", which are two labels forming a chemistry. Art Rock as a label wasn't written off from the main judgement around here, it was just changed as a genre.

Oh, I wasn't talking about the use of "Art Rock" on PA, just about the fact that "art rock" was an old word in rock lexicology, nothing else. Moreover, I think the splitting of "Art Rock" and "Progressive Metal" had been some of the wisest things done on PA.
