What is with this genre? It sounds very interesting and I plan on pinking up a few of the seminal albums when I have some extra cash, but I find it curious that almost nobody seems to listen to this genre or talk about it in the forum. Can someone enlighten me as to some of it's finer points? Is this genre necessary? Might it be gotten rid of and it's bands integrated into the other genres? Would anyone miss it?

Don't know what to say. I love loads of artists from this scizophrenic genre. There's tons more to be found. And even more related among artists in progfolk, krautrock, jazzfusion etc... The real problem is not Indo/raga, but that PA only allow one genre per artist. Very silly, and misleading.
Try Andre Fertier's Clivage's two first releases. Two of the finest eastern/jazzfusion albums ever made. |

I am not very familiar with the subgenre, but I have always had an interest in Indian music (I even practiced Southern Indian dancing for a couple of years), so I'd like to delve a bit deeper into it. As to now, the only Indo-Prog album I've heard is Natural Elements by Shakti - an excellent listen indeed, found for about 5 euros in one of my regular music stores.

Yeah, I've been doing a little research into Indian music. DO the "raga rock" bands adhere to the rules of raga? or are the more or less rock bands that use indian sounds and instruments. I'm trying to find some recordings of some hindustani music.

I've done a little more research (with help from wikipedia and the links to the ihatemusic forums (thanks, visitor13)) and I think Ravi Shankar seems to be a good place to start for Indian Classical music. I'm going to locate some of his music and go from there. I'm going to look for some Shakti as well since that seems to be the most significant Indo Prog/Raga Rock band.

If the term Indo prog means prog bands that come from sub continent, then from top of my head, I can mention two bands, Mizraab from Pakistan (quite good hard prog) and Motherjane from India (yet to hear but heard they are good). But if it means bands that fuse ethnic music with prog , which is interesting then my knowledge is I have to say limited.
Labelling 'foreign' bands can be misleading..for most prog bands no matter where they come from play some form of prog sub genre which is universal (like the band Osiris from Bahrain..coming from Middle East you would think they fuse oriental sounds, but their music is quite symphonic in Camel vein and could be from any country, while Amaseffer or Orphaned Land from Israel do fuse a lot of Middle Eastern music/instruments in their heavey prog style).
so term Indo prog/raga rock can also be quite misleading..
