Very innovative groups here, the founder of the RIO movement and one of the most important Krautrock bands of all time. Both are unique and can easily put off the faint of heart, but which is your favorite and why?
I wonder which one I voted for. Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages. Henry Cow's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=608 Amon Duul 2's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=855 As always, discussions are encouraged. Western Culture is easily one of my top 25 albums, and the rest of HC's discography is excellent material. Amon Duul II, well I've listened to most of their quality material and I tend to lose attention in the later halves of some albums, such as Yeti. So the almighty Henry Cow it is.

All four of their albums are probably in my top 25 albums. |

Both bands are great. I guess it just comes down to a preference of RIO to psych for me. Henry Cow it is! |

LegEnd and Western Culture are two great records, Amon Duul II I like, but not as much...
so HC it is! |

I love both, but "moo". Henry Cow is on too high a pedestal in my collection (some use CD racks, I use pedestals).

As much as I like Henry Cow, the early Düüls (up to and including "Made In Germany") are in my top five. Later on they lose somewhat, though "Vortex" was kind of a return to form, albeit in a different style. Their British branch, formed by founding members John Weinzierl and Dave Anderson (but without the "2" in the name) had some great albums too, like "Hawk Meets Penguin" (which sounds like early Amon Düül 2) and "Die Lösung", which features the late Robert Calvert of Hawkwind on vocals (he also wrote the lyrics), Guy Evans of Van der Graaf Generator on drums and Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton of the Ozric Tentacles on guitar and synthesizer. A highly recommended album!

Two fantastic bands, although I do prefer Henry Cow due to the strength of In Praise of Learning and Western Culture.

I suppose I fall into the "faint of heart", as I am easily put off by both of these acts. Actually, I have only heard Leg End from Henry Cow, and I actually think that it is pretty good, but I have been warned that is about as far as I should go with them. I have only heard Yeti from Amon Duul II and it is very possibly the least favorite album that I own; at least of those that don't feature cookie monster on lead vocals. Thus, I refrain from voting since obviously I have no idea what I am talking about within the constraints of this poll.

Henry Cow by miles, but only because I'm just not the biggest fan of krautrock in general. Obviously ADII is one of the giants; I'm particularly fond of Wolf City for some reason.

Amon Duul II for me. I've yet to hear a Henry Cow piece that's moved me half as much as the phenomenal Touchmaphal (a bonus track from Phallus Dei's remaster), and I'd consider Yeti a masterpiece or at least damn close to that.

I have to go with ADII. I just bought two of their albums - Wolf City and Yeti - and they are both great listens.
Alternately, HC's Western Culture has done nothing for me thus far...

Amon Duul II for me... As I much as I love Henry Cow's elegant baroque-meets-jazz style of avant garde music, the raw power of Amon Duul II, particularly Yeti and Tanz der Lemminge, gives them the edge.

Yeah, I was extremely pleasantly surprised at how the polls turned out. I narrowed all of my bands I wanted in the tournament down, and then all of the matchups were random. Henry Cow needs more votes. |
