Hey, I saw that same concert it was July 5 or 6  in the Miami Arena (I believe it was 6, being that I had to change my return ticket to Lima because the concert was delayed), where else will a Peruvian see it besides Miami? LOL

Has Kilmister/King been mentioned yet?

My favorite Prog & Prog Related rhythm sections:
John Wetton/ Bill Bruford - King Crimson
Mike Rutherford/ Phil Collins - Genesis
Chris Squire/ Bill Bruford- Yes
Tony Levin/ Manu Katche - Peter Gabriel
Les Claypool/ Herb Alexander - Primus

Non-Prog but still quite good rhythm sections:
Mark King/ Phil Gould  - Level 42
Jack Bruce/ Ginger Baker - Cream
Barry Oakley/ Butch Trucks/ Jamoe Johanson - Allman Brothers

Let me be a little different and humble, but sensible:

For me, without a doubt, the best rhythm section in recent years is the one of Pal Sovik and Olav Nygard from FRUITCAKE. AMAZING!!!

Also the one of Mark Zonder and Joe DiBiase from FATES WARNING. EXQUISITE!!!

I've only read one comment about glover and paice, they were really important to the deep purple sound and i think one complements the other perfectly, especially live, (made in japan, in the improvisation and lengthy version of space truckin')

since no German musicians have been mentioned so far (as usual):

Helmut Hattler (bass) / Jan Fride (drums) of Kraan
Peter Kühmstadt (bass) / Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru). also Hattler / Neumeier and Hartwig / Neumeier
Gerald Luciano Hartwig (bass) / Freddy Setz (drums). very short-lived (for the band of Embryo guitarist Roman Bunka), but nevertheless excellent.

I could name more, but will leave it to that.

other excellent rhythm sections are Vander / Top and Moerlen / Howlett; I won't name those that have been mentioned dozens of times already

I'm rather enjoying Bussonnet/Jeand'heur at the moment - they're the best thing about that F. Thollot album ('Contact'), and I cannot wait for my just-ordered One Shot CD to arrive... the samples I heard were ace. Smile

(I can imagine revisiting this thread for shopping list ideas at some point.  I can take or leave guitar solos and singing, but oooohh, rhythm section rhythm section rhythm section!!  An excellent rhythm section does it for me, every time! Tongue)

Has anyone mentioned

Shulman/Weathers [ Gentle Giant ]

I like the Wetton/Bruford combination of UK.

Here's a few more which is a mixed bag.
Pastorious/Erskine/Acuna is hard to go past...so

Jones/Bergi [ Brand X ]
Fowler/Humphreys [ Zappa incarnations ]
Ahearn/Bozzio
Thunes/Wackerman
Rainey/Gadd [ Steely Dan incarnations ]
Jackson/Purdie
Barney/Lawson
Washington/Carlock

....and some solid less talked about combos

Wedgwood/Russell [ Curved Air-'Air Cut' era]
Perry/Coughlan [ Caravan ]
Clarke/Hiseman [ Colosseum]
Murray/Mole/Hiseman [ Colosseum II ]
Williams/Connor [ Audience ]
MacCormick/Wyatt [ Matching Mole ]
Looking still the same after all these years...

Woops - forgot Cornick/Bunker.

[When you look at some the Isle of Whyte live footage all those years ago, and compare them with some of the others featured [ e.g. Moody Blues ], there is just no comparisin. Wonderfully tight and strong ].

oh and Jon Hiseman/John Mole, organic yet painfully tight, and any bassist that could keep up with Hiseman and do tasty chops has to be damn good

Exactly why I too felt they were worthy of a mention .

Mike Clarke, although not the 'chopiest' of players, also combined very well with Hiseman in COLOSSEUM as mentioned above in my list. Hiseman is/was a wonderful player and was still using the double bass drum set up, at least on the COLOSSEUM DVD which, by the way, is excellent [ that reunion concert, the exact name of which escapes me. Live in Cologne or something ].

Nice to see rhythm sections getting due recognition in this thread - the 'engine room' of any band worth its salt, without doubt.
