On a recent trip to Cologne, I was fascinated by a busker playing an instrument I can best describe as a conical shaped steel drum, which had indents and was played with the fingers. It had a wonderful sound but I didn't know what it was.

I have since discovered it's called a Hang (not sure how you pronounce this) and features on a recent CD by the jazz group Portico Quartet. Other bands such as Gong and possibly Muse have used one. After rummaging around the Web, I find they're very hard to get hold of!

Anyone else come across this instrument?

Anyone interested should check this out, featuring Didier Malherbe in the Hadouk Trio.

I used to have one.  They are expensive and very hard to come by.  Long waiting list.
Occasionally popup on ebay.  Most recent one I saw for sale on ebay was going for $5K!

I have since sold it (miss it), and now use samples from Soniccouture that run on Kontakt3, triggered by a Korg padKontrol.  Fun stuff!

I had this crazy idea of getting one myself, until I saw how much they went for!

What an interesting instrument. I'd love to be able to play it.
