The second match of round 1 has begun! These two artists haven't a whole lot in common other than some jazz/fusion roots and a unique, easily recognizable compostional style. Which one will advance?
Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages. Area's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=26 Gong's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=848 As always, discussions are encouraged. Recap: Round 1 A1: Previous match (A1): http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=51423&PN=2 |

Damn, Alex, that's a tough one. Area slightly edges out Gong for me, although You is better than any Area album.

Area.
One of the best. Ever. In my top ten of artists of all time. I love Gong but my vote goes to Area.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |

Damn you! I demand you split this into two polls: Area vs. Frost and Gong vs. Nightwish.
Love both, I mean I really love Gong, but also going with Area. |

I like AREA, especially ARBEIT MACHT FREI ..great musicainship, great vocals.
but when i think of GONG, it makes me smile, makes me feel good! t
Not that the music was always consistent (let's be honest), could be silly on occasion, but the ''planet'' Gong mythology has no equal in the prog world!
They released quite a few good albums, the trilogy of course, Floating Anarchy is amazing, Shapeshifter as well.
Also when you mention GONG, you can't forget the Daevid Allen-less GONG playing great rock/fusion under Pierre Moerlen supervision releasing other good albums (Shamal/gazeuse).
and of course, you can't forget those ''grandiose'' artwork covers. Also i have seen them 3 times in concert and that was the most amazing shows i have witnessed......with Hawkwind!
Also what would say the POT HEADS PIXIES if i didn't vote for Gong!

I prefer the jazz flavour of AREA with those amazing vocals to GONG's psychedelic trippiness. "You" is an amazing album though.

Yeah nothing feminine about a Gong! But like febus, I have a soft spot for Howlett-Blake-Moerlen-Hillage and Malherbe in particular , plus that Allen guy!

Yeah, I may post 3 soon because votes for this are starting to settle down. To stimulate discussion for anyone to answer: What are your favorite Gong and Area albums? |
