Jarre is amazing. I don't understand some people's attitudes about him being a "lesser" of an artist than TD or Schulze just because his works may be more easy to grasp for a casual listener. Equinoxe and Oxygene are absolutely amazing albums... and for some reason I always like to listen to his albums in the winter.
He has a certain unique creativity to him that I really like; the albums almost make you imagine an actual place because they're so well-structured. |
I couldn't said it better myself. And his concerts are fantastic. I've seen him live three times and it really enhances the overall listening experience, as well as offering a spectacular lightning show. My favorite albums are Equinoxe, Oxygene, Magnetic Fields and Rendez-Vous, though Chronologie and Oxygene 7-13 are fabulous as well
|
Unfortunately, I have never seen him live... though I have seen some videos on Youtube and I bet that would be absolutely amazing. I've seen Rush live twice in my entire life and those are the only concerts I've been to so far. I'm also seeing Opeth live with a friend of mine in October (Opeth is his 2nd favorite band), so that should be quite interesting as well.
The only one of those albums that I'm missing is Magnetic Fields. I'll have to get it. Does it sound more like Rendez-Vous, Equinoxe, or Oxygene in terms of style? Or is it pretty unique?
|
It's quite different from those. Instead of having that spacey sound, it's more mechanic and rhythmic, and uses sampling as a element in the music sometimes. It's an excellent album, and Magnetic Fields Part 1 remains one of his best songs ever!
Have you heard his Zoolook album, btw?
|
Oh. Despite how much I love that spacey sound, that actually sounds pretty intriguing. Yet another album for me to check out! This list is literally never-ending.
I have heard Zoolook, but I need to hear it more. It was good I believe, but it didn't hit me as hard as the others. It has been quite a while since I've heard it though.

It's a very crazy album, using sampling of voices a lot to make melodies and sounds. Quite avant-garde actually, although blended with more commercial sounding melodies. Oh, and Adrian Belew guests on it
Definitely listen to it again soon!

Yeah, I found Western Culture to be the most demanding listen so far... but I have no clue if that means I enjoyed it the least. I don't think. All of them will need more listens, but that one would probably more so.
Im a newbie on some genres as well, such as Post-Rock, Electronica and so on. I haven't got time to really explore those yet. And even though I have specialized myself in RIO/Avant, there's still loads of bands Im not familiar with yet!
I know a decent amount about Electronic Prog... I have a substantial amount of Vangelis albums, about 30 of Tangerine Dream, some Froese solo albums, and a few Schulze ones. I also really like Jean-Michel Jarre, particularly Equnioxe and Oxygene (original and 7-13). The genre I'm probably the biggest newbie to is Post-Rock though, since it's the least attractive to me personally. I still have some Sigur Ros and Godspeed CDs though, but hardly ever pull them out with all of the music I have to hear first.
Having as much as I do, it's amazing that there's simply so much great music out there to be discovered!
|
Henry Cow are a typical band that grows on you. Just give their albums more spins, and listen to them closely!
Yeah, I figured. I just started re-listening to Legend now.
I know some Vangelis and TD as well. And Im a HUGE fan of Jarre!! I have all of his albums. Definitely one of my favorite artists!

I haven't listened to a full Godspeed album in... wow, at least a year and a half. I've tried a couple times since then but my mind always wanders off for some reason. I don't know, maybe it'll click more one of these days. I appreciate what they do, but the music almost goes too slow for me.

Sounds fantastic! Red Queen is my favorite as well. Their debut is pure folk, but very charming indeed. Speaking of Folk, have you heard Garmarna? Swedish folk band that send you several hundred years back when listening to them. Really great stuff!

I had to highlight your last one just so I could see it. I haven't heard of them, but that sounds really intriguing! Yet another thing to hear. SO MUCH! I'd still consider myself somewhat of a newbie to some sub-genres of prog and overall to the most obscure stuff, but I'm getting there. I'm not extremely familiar with Henry Cow so I put them again right now. Western Culture is pretty good; I know this will definitely grow on me though! At least now I've heard all of their albums after this one is finished. No clue what my favorite is yet; I definitely need more listens. I might go chrono again after WC.

U Totem comes to mind. I only have their first, but it does feature a lot of bassoon. Oh, yeah, I do really need to hear that. On my list!
Good
Also, Combo FH, a very obscure RIO band heading from Czech Republic, uses bassoon a lot. Not available on CD though, but I can provide a little link for you if you want.. That would be extremely appreciated.
On it's way..
Thanks!!
I love Gryphon, BTW! Awesome.
They're really fantastic. I especially love all of Red Queen and the title track for Midnight Mushrumps.
I can't wait for their new CD!
Yeah, and I really like Raindance as well. Lovely little album.
They got a new one out soon? I'll surely grab it then!
I really like Raindance too, and the debut is good as well. Well, it's all good, I'm just completely in love with Red Queen.
I have no clue when the new one is coming out, I just know there's a reunion and that they're supposedly working on it right now. I also read that they're using Red Queen as their main inspiration (of any of their previous albums) for the new one's sound.
