Well I think some of this may have already been said, but here's my two penn'orth..............
I think we need to ignore the fact that various Purple and Sabbath incarnations well outlived the Zeppelin break-up. Those 80s/90s efforts are just glorified lookbacks to better times. So in essence we are looking at the three bands in their late 60s and 70s heyday, agreed?
In that context, I don't think Sabbath are in the same league as the other two bands. Ozzy could never sing and most of their stuff was too mind-numbingly heavy. (Great model though for some of the 80s music-lite hair-rock which followed, I agree.)
I was more of a fan of Purple when I was a teenager in the 70s and I still love In Rock and Machine Head - truly great albums. I got Machine Head the week it came out and didn't listen to anything else for probably a fortnight. Ritchie Blackmore: well I never understood why anyone would prefer another guitarist.
But which of the three bands has stood the test of time? Be honest. It's Zeppelin by a mile, it's not even a contest, although some of Purple's stuff still stands up to scrutiny as well. From Zep 1 thru Physical Graffiti, few artists have strung together a series of albums so full of classics. (All right, yes, I agree, Beatles, Bowie 70s period, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder 70s period........... you can probably name a few more but if you want to consider 6 great albums on the trot, Zeppelin are right up there.)
Anyway, cheers.

Gotta cast my vote for Black Sabbath, although Led Zepellin and Deep Purple are both incredible bands as well. Sabbath and Tony Iommi virtually taught me how to play guitar. I learned "Paranoid" way before I ever learned "Stairway to Heaven" and "Smoke On the Water".

Sabbath for me. Wouldn't have expected Zeppelin to be so far in the lead, wow.

Once I readed in a guitar magazine... "Tony Iommi is the father of the riff".
And this is quite truth.... It's such a hard choice... but I think that Sabbath represents metal.

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. I'd rank them just the same. All three bands have great musicians and catchy songs, so it's kind of a tough call, but I would rank Purple first for the Lord vs. Blackmore dueling solos alone. Sabbath is one of my all time favorites, and is just so much darker and heavier than Led Zep...I like quite a few Led Zeppelin songs like "No Quarter" and "Friends," yet I find some songs like "Fool in the Rain" beyond annoying. Robert Plant's voice just really irritates me sometimes, though for some strange reason I have never found Ozzy's voice to be annoying And let's not forget that Rick Wakeman played on a Sabbath album

Well, okay, I've loved all these bands, but my love(and maybe if we talk about Led Zeppelin, we can say passion) to Deep Purple and Led zeppelin has been diluted, meanwhile I was beginning to like more and more Black Sabbath during Ozzy years. I haven't heard any bad album from that era(I think the reason for it is that I haven't heard Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die :D). I borrowed Heaven and Hell from library one day, and in my opinion it was f**king blatant and boring, such a lame heavy rock album. I haven't heard other albums, 'cause those early albums full of burning riffage and primitive, great rock music are enough to me. And yes, in my opinion Ozzy is a great singer.

If you go through each discography & count the duds, you can line 'em up properly ...

For a reason or another I've never been too enthusiastic about Zep or Purple, but Sabbath works for me. At the moment I have the first six Ozzy albums, Past Lives and The Best of. Heaven and Hell has been on my shopping list for an eternity, perhaps I'll get around to it some day.
