I am not sure of the extent of the use of the term "head music" outside of Australia (and outside of the late 60's, early 70's). This has always been a nice, generic term used in Australia for music "you have to get your head into".
 
To my mind "head music" kinda sums up "progressive" in a sense of not being in the popular music mainstream ... music that has stepped (progressed?) outside of the norm.
 
Hmm, does this sound like a serious point not meant for the Just For Fun forum? Ermm

A search in PA for "head music" reveals that a few people use the term in reviews, etc. I imagine it means to them kinda the same thing as it means to me.
 
Anyone care to elaborate on what the term "head music" means to you if it is a term you currently use?

for me.. it is ... music to get stoned to... like early Floyd.. ADII  Hawkwind..

That is how I would see some other PA entries now that I have looked at a few.
 
It would seem the Aussie use is less chemically fuelled as a lasting definition ... but may have been when the phrase was first coined LOL
