Heck, I can't remember if I posted in this thread in the past and I'm certainly not going to go through 13 pages of posts to find out, but my favorite solo as of now is Alan Holdsworth's solo in UK's first, self-named album, in the track "In The Dead Of Night." It reminds me of the imagination and seeming disregard of what is going on musically (although it all fits together) that Fripp shows in 21'st Century Man, which I would choose for my second choice.

OK, I'll bite... In cronological order and with an eye on variety, while omitting some of the more obvious choices already mentioned many many times in this thread. (Doesn't mean I don't truly love most of them.)
1. Martin Barre - We Used to Know (Jethro Tull)
Not one but *two* excellent solos and all too hard to choose between them... Bliss.
2. Peter Jennings - Depression (Cressida)
The last few minutes feature a veritable guitar-organ fest, with the guitar solo building things up and then the organ, played by Jennings, bringing it all to a brilliant end.
3. Jan Akkerman - Birth (Focus)
Oh man, his tone is the best ever...and the playing sounds so unique; kind of restrained, assured and rocking all at the same time. Wonderful!
4. Steve Howe - Sound Chaser (Yes)
Coolness! Howe is all over the place on this and yet he keeps it all nicely together like the true master he is.
5. Tony Banks - Mad Man Moon (Genesis)
The "kid brother" to Firth of Fifth, heh. I love FoF as much as the next person but piano-wise MMM is another excuisite Banks highlight.
6. David Gilmour - Hey You (Pink Floyd)
Comfortably Numb is fantastic but I still think I slightly prefer the solo on this one.
7. Alex Lifeson - 1st solo on Natural Science (Rush)
Always been a Rush highlight for me... Classic stuff from Alex. The solo fits the song really well.
8. Daniel Gildenlöw - People Passing By (Pain Of Salvation)
Towards the end of this track one can find a typically powerful and emotional solo from our Daniel. He really knows how to squeeze everything out from every note on that guitar...
9. Johnny Greenwood - Lucky (Radiohead)
Far from reaching prog's lofty heights, perhaps, but oh, how I love it still! Perfect example of a solo that fits the mood and the structure of the song - my favourite Radiohead song at that - to a tee.
10. Steven Wilson - Stranger By The Minute (Porcupine Tree)
A shamelessly poppish solo, which always, always puts a smile on my face whenever I hear it.

Search for "Kayleigh" on You-Tube to find the guitar solo part played by some amateurs. A real treat. That's a beautiful solo, in fact everytime Rothery picks up and plays a guitar it's like the heavens opening up and angels singing. Ok so that's a stupid metaphor, but you get my meaning, lol. It's a wonder Steven can still play with those chubby fingers, lol. "Sugar Mice", "The Other Half" are two more examples, but he's done so much it's silly.

The trumpet solo in Kayo Dot´s The Manifold Curiosity!!! Even when I disliked Kayo Dot I would listen to this song only for that solo!!! Now I think it´s the best of their career... well, I havent heard the new album yet, so I better not jump to conclusions

For me the greatest keyboard solo is in RPWL's "3 lights".
Starting just after 5.00, it kicks in with what sounds like an inverted gasp of breath.
To me the feel of this solo is so unbounded and real, unlike any I know.
It just sounds real, unpretentious and is sublimely executed.

1. Any hammond solo by Keith Emerson.
2. Steve Howe's guitar solo at the end of Starship Trooper from Yessongs.
3. Ian Anderson's solos on Crosseyed Mary.
And not a top favorite, but in Rick Wakeman's Return to the Center of the Earth, in the fourth track, he orchestrates what would be a guitar solo to the flute section. It sounds awesome.
