I'm not sure what styles make you tick, so it's difficult to suggest bands... how much do you like chamber music and such like?

If you like your Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Messiaen, Bartók and others, you may like some Univers Zero and Present.  It sounds like you're not that keen on depressing music though, so that is why I suggested Samla Mammas Manna.  You should try them again definitely.

Also worth a try maybe a band like Cartoon, although again, availability is not easy (well, Greg Walker and Wayside sell them).

I'd like to have an idea what makes you tick and what makes you grimace.

As for me, well, I am not keen on musicals so Kew. Rhone. I find quite awkward at times.  I also dislike faux-Reggae.

I may not be too keen on depressing music - as I said above, reading some Univers Zero reviews, I'm unsure if I would like what was described.  I may try one of these "chamber music" avant bands just to get a data point, see what I think - it should provide valuable information as to whether I want to continue, or it's something that won't interest me.

Cartoon do happier chamber rock.  You may also love Pocket Orchestra.  I'll send you some samples at some point to see what you think.

As another data point to something you mentioned, I absolutely adore Kew. Rhone. - I think it's becoming one of my favorite albums.

I just didn't like the Bersteinisms on that album.  I really have a disturbing hatred towards musicals.  I heard an excerpt from Westside Story on radio earlier and it was horrible to my ears.

For me, NeBeLNeST's first two lack that something too but ZePTo is much better.  As for Far Corner, well to my ears, they also lack that something and I find them rather boring.

Are Crisis in Clay and Hunger's Teeth as uninteresting as both Far Corner and the first two by NeBeLNeST?

I'm not a big fan of these two 5UU's albums as well, and while I understand very well why you have this criticism of Far Corner and Nebelnest (I had similar feelings at some point), I've loved Far Corner's s/t from the start but the second one is to me not that interesting (though I do appreciate the work gone into it). As for Nebelnest, I'm in a pickle since I came to like Nova Express after relatively many listens (was a matter of getting their style) but Zepto just doesn't click... I need to relisten to their first to make proper comments.
I also need to get that Purgatories album of 5UU's.

Regarding Purgatories
is my favourite 5UU's album, that is a very good one.

Logan, since we see eye to eye with regards to U Totem's s/t album, I'll get that album for sure now, without prior listening.

It's good to see Make a Rising is getting more love at RYM.  For a long time, it only had 3 ratings.  Up to 5!

Excellent. Clap

Especially in light of Kultivator's Barndomens Stigar album getting re-released.

I think I also suggested Potemkine, so put them on the list too. Wink

Assaf, you don't really think I meant that, do you?

Obviously my initial post (about Ceux du Dehors being worse than Heresie) was IMO, so when Laplace decided to tell me that was only IMO, I made a sarcastic response.

EDIT: signature fixed

LOL

Nice one Chris. Clap

By the way, I added Hasse Bruniusson to RIO/Avant-prog yesterday, just in case anyone wishes to review his albums.

Flying Food Circus is very good, in my opinion.

Ha Ha.  what a funny exchange.  I think Ceux Du Dehors is Univers Zero's finest hour, but Heresie is not far behind....even though comparing them is illogical as they are totally different styles, even though they are the same named band (with diferent members mind you)....

Thanks, Assaf.  Luckily there's a lot of information about him about.

However, if you could maybe find a track listing for that DVD, it'd be much appreciated.  I read that it contains all the tracks on the album and one bonus one.  I don't know if the track lengths are the same either.

Any assistance on that would be gratefully appreciated.  I may actually order that DVD from Wayside at some point too.
