Well, the "friend of a friend" word on the street is there's a new one this summer.  (as in, someone on another forum saw them live and said that Nils said there would be a new one this summer).

has anyone heard any of the other MOTOR TOTEMIST GUILD discs besides City Of Mirrors?

I was just curious if the quality and extreme diversity is repeated in the other albums, as I read on here that those who recorded City Of Mirrors consisted of an entirely new lineup.  Either way C.O.M. is outstanding and an excellent addition within the RIO halls....I highly recommend this release.   I would be curious to hear the 5uus/MTG comp album..... any additional info about their other material would be appreciated....

I dig U-Totem, and I don't even like 5uu's very much, so I think I aught to check out Motor Totemist Guild since they seem to be the part of U-Totem that I like.

yes.  they are a must...... well at least to hear....at least once.  This album I own, City of Mirrors, is extremely chaotic and shifting and mutating into tons of different instrumentations and melodies, rarely repeating themes for very long, in fact rarely repeating styles for very long either.  There is a very very strong avant garde under-current in that the note choices are usually minor key or dissonant and clashing....a dissonance that is delicious if you have the ear for it, but several people will likely be put off by it.  (did I mention how complex and polyrhythmic the compostions are???)This album is in a league of its own in terms of composition, attention deficit disorder style songwriting (some real long songs at that), yet I imagine that bands such as Mr. Bungle/Discus were influenced by MTG.  Seriously this album is a monster and will take some time to digest.  when I first bought it over a year ago, I listened once and was distracted, so I did not like it too much.  I recently sat down and gave my attention to it fully and was rewarded with a vision of absolute mad mad mad genius.  the thing I like so much about it as well is the inclusion of several classically oriented instruments;  flute, bassoon, oboe, keys galore......and most of it is entirely instrumental (so those of you who hate Dagmar Krause- whom I love- or other atonal vocalists, fear not).  In the end I am left breathless and wanting more.  Time to hit repeat.  I think it will take weeks of intensive listening to get to the point where you know what is coming next, this is so unique and unpredictable.....

I do not know if that qualifies as a decent review of the album or not, but hopefully it helps point out some feelings about it.  I love it now and will be revisiting it quite a bit.  This is top notch Avant RIO here!

All America City is different from City of Mirrors.
You can read all about them here:

As much as I love Grigsby's compositions, I think the best listening experience I have with Tim Hodgkinson. Avalanche, you have to get Hodgkinson's solo albums, particularly, Each In Our Own Thoughts.

Oh and U Totem- s/t is one of my all time favourite albums; It's brilliant!!!

U Totem's s/t is also an all-time favorite of mine....I especially love the multi-vocal harmony on the first track...the female vocals rule.  also it is wonderfully complex yet melodic!  stunning album!  (it is amazing how their other release just does not seem adequate in comparison....but I still like it, just not as much as the s/t)

Have you heard Regarding Purgatories by 5uu's?  It's by far their best.  Their earlier ones simply don't compare.  At all.

I do like that one, but it just doesn't compare to Purgatories.

I tried Crisis in Clay and Hunger's Teeth and found both to be far too...artificial, for back of a better word.

Regarding Purgatories is a *lot* better, especially in the respect you mentioned.  At least, I think it is; I haven't listened in forever...

I agree. Crisis in Clay and Hunger's Teeth are both albums that (for me) promise a lot more than they actually deliver, and I regard Drake and Kermann as probably the two most important and prodigiously gifted RIO musicians to emerge since the original 'movement' in the late 70s. I love the U Totem albums, but CIC and HT just seem to lack a certain something.

Purgatories shows 5UUs realising their massive potential, and a blindingly good album it is too. Perhaps it's because Bob Drake wasn't involved and Dave Kermann was pretty much in control of the whole project.

I have Crisis in Clay CD and must give it a spin.

For me, NeBeLNeST's first two lack that something too but ZePTo is much better.  As for Far Corner, well to my ears, they also lack that something and I find them rather boring.

Are Crisis in Clay and Hunger's Teeth as uninteresting as both Far Corner and the first two by NeBeLNeST?
