I have an Olivier Messiaen album, but it's not electro acoustic. It's very good though and I prefer it to the Bartók I have. Now all I need is that one very sort after Albert Huybrechts album with that chamber orchestra work on. |

It looks like his entire electro acoustic career consisted of a piece 15 minutes long which he didn't like. It was only released because Pierre Henry salvaged it.

By the way, I added Tigrova Mast (long overdue on my part); an excellent Croatian band, original, ,creative, adventurous, wild, crazy, experimental... they've released one album through RAIG last year and will release another one this year.
Their first album has rather short songs, but packed with energy and is a very fun listen; somewhat made me think of the intensity (but not style exactly) of Mr. Bungle.

Oh my god.
I'm going to be looking for this immediately, this sounds incredible. Agh, this is awesome. You can hear more here:
Listen to the songs under the album Sookie Jump. This is so great, it's got such a nightmarish atmosphere and it's so theatrical.
You can listen to the whole album via Rhapsody: http://www.rhapsody.com/eldridgeskell Edited by mecca - April 14 2008 at 23:39 |

I must say, ZePTO is much better than NeBeLNeST's previous two albums, I'm completely surprised!

Any thoughts on Guapo's new album, Elixirs?
I for one haven't stopped listening to it. The music sounds very tame, but it sounds just right to my ears. Their addition of ethnic sounds makes their music even more mystical than before (and more colorful as well in a different-shades-of-grey kind of way... hehehe). After listening to it for more than 6 times and always wanting to play it again after it stops, its safe to say that this is the first album of the year that I'm psyched about. After years of waiting it finally paid off. My love for Guapo is mostly due because they where the first Avant-Zeuhl band I've consciously heard and their 5 Suns album still blows my mind every time I listen to it. Aside from Guapo I've been listening a lot to Magma's Kohntarkosz and Birds & Buildings. Both stunning releases and Birds & Buildings is definitely one of my top 5 choices of the year. |

yes, the new Guapo is outstanding! I recently went on a hauling spree, picking up a lot of the material off of the ProgArchives Avant/RIO link....will post some thoughts as they come in....
Discus sounds like they would be interesting, they have been likened to Mr. Bungle, which is right up my alley! http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=922 I found both of their albums on amazon.com (I am a fiend), and due to excellent and enticing reviews (above), I had to purchase it. I also picked up the Cartoon two on one album....cannot get enough of that RIO sound. I also finally got a copy of 5uus "crisis in clay", which may be their finest moment (and the most aggressive?)......ah, I could listen to this stuff all day. Also picked up The Residents "our tired, our poor, our huddled masses", which I owned before I had my feet wet in prog, now I have to own it again after foolishly getting rid of it. I am basically systematically going down the list of Avant prog/RIO artists and trying to collect as much of it as possible..... |

Elixirs and Manfauna are on there way to my house as I say this... probably on a 'plane or maybe even in the UK by now.
I'm very eager to hear both of these releases, as I missed out on Manfauna last year. Edited by James - April 19 2008 at 22:15 |

Oh yeah, I forgot about Elixers! That's the next one I need to grab; I really dig their last couple of albums and I hear only good things about this one.
I don't like to hear that this one is tamer, though. I'm sure it'll be good, but I always liked the high energy present in their music. |

I was going to get the vinyl editions of Five Suns and Black Oni, but kind of didn't... maybe I still can, I don't know. I have them both on CD though.

^^^ I'll replace my MP3 versions of them soon, but on CD.
I can relate. Five Suns was my first album from them and I love the unrelenting energy it has, but Elixirs is a completely different beast and it works. What the album lacks in energy it makes up for the variety in themes and color which was something that the previous 2 Guapo albums always missed and it wasn't a bad thing then, but now the variety adds alot to the music and its atmosphere. Believe me that you won't care about high energy after a couple of listens of the album. |

Manfuana is great, I eagerly await Headless Horses' new album this year. Elixers, however, I felt was inferior to Black Oni.

Ok, so this is the only place i could think of to ask. Apologies if it is out of place.
Does anybody know where i can find Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood albums? I'm particularly interested in "Enter The Cult...", but goodness it's hard to find, excluding the mymwly blog (on which i will enquire if i can't find it anywhere else). I've tried boomkat and the rateyourmusic links. |

speaking of the latest Guapo,(elixirs) I have given it a few listens and have given it some time to sink in, and well I think it is their most mature/evolved/realized and most satisfying work yet. IT is a perfect synthesis of Bohren and Der Club of Gore/Miles Davis material. very dark, moody, slow, jazzy, and avant noir greatness. I think it might be their best. Just because it may not be immediate, and it is not as "rockin" as past endeavors does not make it a lesser album by any stretch. Outstanding album!

Unfortunately there's no way I'll be able to take time off for the Zorn season, which is a great pity as the 6 Litanies night looks brilliant and I 'd love to see Masada as well, although I'd be pleased to catch any of them. Frith, Zorn and Patton is quite a proposition!
The RIO festival looks like it will coincide with the Easter break, so I should be on for that.

Speaking of Bohren and Der Club of Gore... I've only recently come across this band and have not yet heard a single note of their music.
Can somebody recommend me something by them? I'm guessing they're kind of a chamber rock type outfit, but correct me if this is not the case. Edited by James - April 23 2008 at 20:17 |

they are best described as "progressive doom jazz".....very dark and morose instrumental jazz. get it all. |
