Considering how hopelessly trapped in 1974 I am ever since I traveled back there in high school, this is going to be a short list.  Only a few of these hold a candle to my all-time favorites.

Coheed & Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2002)
Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 (2003)
Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness (2005)
Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World For Tomorrow (2007)
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (2006)
My Morning Jacket - Z (2005)
The Darkness - Permission To Land (2003)
The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell...And Back (2005)
Korn - Issues (1999)

...and that'll do it

Not much into modern stuff. (Or not AS much as the 60's-80's), but here's some modern favorites:

Rhapsody - Legendary Tales
The Flower Kings - Flower Power
Opeth - Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

And if the whole 90's is "modern":
Ozric Tentacles - Strangeitude, Live Underslunky, Arborescence
Porcupine Tree - On the Sunday of Life
The Flower Kings - Back in the World of Adventures, Retropolis
Dream Theater - Images & Words, Awake
Blind Guardian - Somewhere far Beyond, Imaginations from the Other Side
Death - Spiritual Healing

That list will probably change the moment I listen to the earlier Porcupine Tree work, but until then, the two LTE albums are placeholder for years 98 and 99, because, simply put, I didn't luisten to many good modern bands in those days.

Sorry, Friede - I was a bit disappointed by what I heard on their site.

I can hear they've got something going on there - I didn't hate it at all, but after having spent some time at Garageband, it all sounds rather rough and ready (and that's not just because of the low quality live recordings).

They remind me a lot of some of the underground bands I heard during the 1980s at free festivals - there's a bit of The Magic Mushroom Band and Chocolate Teapot in there.

Sounds like they'd be entertaining live.

Well, I think you can clearly hear the influences they claim to have. And those influences are a list of my favourite artists. And their music is anything but rough and ready. I stumbled across them when an internet prog radio played one of their albums and was immediately hooked. They had everything I miss in modern bands, without the stuff I hate about them ("them" referring to "modern bands").

BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue.

Noticed by the way that 2000 and 2007 were the best years of the 11. Had lots of options in those years. For 1997 and 2004 I had to dig deep to find a great one. Interesting.

yeah, but dig deep you did...I think your list is really good, and these two albums in particular, are incredibly underrated...Wink
