Ok...
1. Dream Theater-I don't think they're really horrendous, but I've never heard anything that was so totally cliched.
2. Radiohead-Certainly not crap, I love them, but they haven't made an original record since Ok Computer.     Taking (Albeit much better) a bunch of electronic concepts from Warp Records and adding a little melodic touch doesn't make you original.
3. Virtually all of Post-Rock- Does anybody really disagree with me here?
4. Symphony X-Same as DT.
There are 4. I can come up with a hell of a lot more if you really want...

Woahwoahwoahwoahwoah, umm... let's take for example Pyramid Song. How is that not innovative? Idioteque? That song was like... radically different from anything else they've ever done and was completely unique. And taking electronic music is one thing, using in a completely new fashion and making it works nearly flawlessly... thats pretty original right there. And let's break away from mass electronic stuffs, shall we? How about In Rainbows? That wasn't electronic at all... and yet... it was a completely new reinvention of themselves in a way that maintained there integrity and delivered something entirely different then anything else in the market. Radiohead pretty much is the single modern band that defines originality. They aren't my favorite, but they sure as hell are original.

Kid A is one of the most original mainstream albums around. And this band doesn't count anyway since you don't label them as crap.

Quote 3. Virtually all of Post-Rock- Does anybody really disagree with me here?

Um, yes. Just because they use guitars the same way doesn't mean they write the same stuff. GYBE sounds quite different from Sigur Ros, and neither sound like Don Caballero, and so on and so forth.

Quote There are 4. I can come up with a hell of a lot more if you really want...

No thanks. You already failed to really come up with 4 example of bands you find to be stale crap.

Warp Records. Just listen to Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, etc.

I have a few responses.
how is post rock recycling anything from the 70's??!!!. its one of the more inovative genres of modern prog.
here ill list a few inovative bands from this genre that are clearly recylcing old ideas
The Pax Cecilia
*Shels
Grayceron
Kayo Dot
Ulver
Worlds End Grilfriend
. . . Need I go on? i can certainly provide more examples and explanation, something you seem incapable of doing.
while your listing examples, which is a good way to argue our point i applaud you, list some more of these modern prog bands that you find to be stale, uninteresting, and rehashed. you've listed three bands. thats certainly not MOST of all modern prog which you seem to be very well versed in.

Yeah MHDTV, I'd say Aphex Twin is way more progressive than the 4 examples you listed.

Actually I was coming up with bands that were unoriginal... Name 5 Post-Rock bands that have done something original in the past 8 years.

Sigur Ros
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
65daysofstatic
Tortoise
Do Make Say Think
Done.

And you are so very wrong in believing that Radiohead are not creative. No one is able to fuse together influences, add their own style, use creative recording techniques, write such interesting lyrics, write such amazing songs.....

I give up. There are too many people arguing and this has nothing to do with the thread.

On a final note, in the case of Radiohead, good songwriting doesn't make you original.

you have been vanquished. Evil%20Smile
on the topic of this thread however, i find that there are very unique and challenging hip-hop acts out there, of which i need to hear more. I do like eminem, have a soft spot for Tupac/Biggie and like a lot of what Jedi Mind Tricks does. I generally consider some trip hop a variant of hip hop - tricky of massive attack for example - and enjoy that style very much. My complaint is with the glittery ringtone-hip hop of soulja boy,  almost 99% of what you hear on the radio.
This thread would have been a bigger success if you hadnt attacked many of this site's members on grounds that do not exist.

EDIT - as a further aside, if you look at my signiture you will see Wu Tang Clan listed among my top artists of the week. ha ha talk about irony.

I wasn't trying to attack people, I was trying to point out that most people have dismissed the entire genre on the basis that Soulja Boy is horrible.

Maybe you didn'ttried to attack in your subconscious, but you attacked, you started a confrontation Prog vs Hip Hop calling some members close minded, saying how fresh was Rap and how stale was Prog, talking about the non inmaginative new Prog bands with a knowledge of a handfull of bands (for what have you talked), mostly of the 90's.

This is a Prog forum, people tend to like Prog more than other genres, most people here won't care for Rap as won't care for N'Sync or the Spice Girls reunion.

If you had only spoken about the quality of determined Hip Hop bands, you probably would had a good reception, but you compared Prog with Hip Hop in a Prog forum.

This was as suicidal as cheering for England against Northern Ireland  in Belfast, and thanks God people is respectful, because you could had received many more harsh responses.

If you had done this in a Hip Hop forum mentioning lets say Raduiohead (which is barely Prog IMO), you would still be receiving insults and people in those forums don't have the moderation of the members here.

You could spend centuries explaining what you  tried to say, but you called New Prog stale, boring, unimaginative, unoriginal and crap, whatever you tried to say doesn't matter, your words speak for you, and each time you tried to repare the damage, you sinked  your other leg in in the mud instead of trying to take the other out.

Now your target is Post Rock, wish you luck, because Post Rockers havemn't started to tal yet.

Better accept your mistake, ask a moderator to close the thread and start a new one talking about whatever band you want but without attacking any Prog band, because you will loose.

Iván

Let's all stop the response to the attack or the bashing on the fallen guy or whatever this thread has turned into...It's clear that the thread starter had a good purpose in the beginning but fatally said incoherent things afterwards. It's been proven that the thread starter had no arguments to support his opinion on prog in the 00's and close-mindedness, but let's realize that mistakes can be done. A young mind can always improve and it's actually better if this happened when he's still young and can learn and not when he's 20+ and is just a hopeless idiotic stubborn troll.... Let it be....

Just two points:

- Eminem is extremely talented..... And I'm actually Zappa returned from the death....

- Ivan said that the post-rock crew has not appeared yet to defend their genre... but I read some references to DT around here... Now.....AngryTongue
