This one was very hard i must say i havent heard much by magma so far, what i have heard was very wierd stuff but good. Camel on the other hand i got 1 album by and its not very wierd pretty easy stuff to get into but still i love it very catchy and sweet music. In the end i voted for magma tough i wanted to vote for camel, becus i like to vote for the underdog.

Camel are NOT a Canterbury band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few ex-Canterbury musicians joined them but they are (emphatically) unconnected with Canterbury. As for the poll, Camel v anyone else = Camel. Edited by Hercules - January 14 2008 at 13:37 |

Well I have to vote for Magma, although I a big Camel fan. The fact is that Magma is harder to understand and appreciate than Camel, but when you get their music you realize how brilliant it is!

Camel is just the better band. Magma is good, but Camel is better.

It's a chocie between the relatively simple and very well done, and the absolutely avant-garde music, always trying to do something absolutely new.
But Magma, unlike Gentle Giant and others, seems to me a band with a strong desire to do new things, but not good enough composition to match this desire, so I vote for Camel |

Camel are soothing and relaxing, Magma are challenging... Went for the latter.

With Magma getting knocked out so early, this competition is effectively sunk for me. I actually like both bands very much, and I have many albums from both (all the key albums and more), but I much prefer Magma. I do love The Snow Goose by Camel which is a beautiful and exciting album for me, and one of the albums that has had the biggest effect on me.
I wonder how many people voting in this poll have listened to multiple albums by both bands. If I had to pick an album of each band to face-off, it would be these (the magma album happens to be my favourite live album of all and one of my favourite albums period): 1975 Live/Hhaï (Köhntark) 4.45 (39 ratings) 1978 A Live Record 4.37 (72 ratings) I wonder what the results would be like if I did a poll for these two live albums going up against each other? -- the voting requirement being dependent on people having heard both, of course. I'm going to -- I can't resist -- as a corollary. Edited by Logan - January 18 2008 at 12:59 |

Having seen Magma live twice I know where my vote goes. One of the concerts I saw of them was at the Leverkusener Jazztage. Mari Boine, the Sami shaman singer, played before Magma, and I really liked her performance. However, when Magma took the stage they completely blew her away. They played MDK and Köhntark; the encores were Kobaiah and Hhai. Simply great.

This neatly shows why Camel is winning the poll by about doube as many votes. Double as many people rated the Camel live album. It is about the same in this poll. Which simply means double as many members of the archive know Camel. |
