Ok, you just won the 100 million dollar lotto and can do anything you want with the money.... as long as it is spent on prog related issues!! What would you do? Here is what I'd do:

1. I would pretty much own Keith Emerson and pay him an incredible sum to find a phenomenal young vocalist and a Terry Bozzio type drummer to put together the ultimate Keyboard prog CD with NO commercial considerations whatsoever. I would also want a Hammond B-3 organ trio formed by him as well. And also commission him to write music for piano and string quartet. 1 CD per year. In return he would become a very rich man by doing my bidding. Ha ha!

2. I would make Robert fripp, John Wetton and Bill Bruford an offer they couldnt refuse to go in to the studio to create "Red 2"

3. I would pay Peter Gabriel and Genesis to reform and perform "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" every night until I said so. ha ha!

4. I would pay all of the members of Asia to simply STOP playing and break up for good.

5. I'd pay Dave Stewart to reform Egg.

6. I'd Get Patrick Moraz back in to Yes and commisson them to do "Relayer 2"

7. I'd find Geoff Downes a good piano teacher since I know he's always wanted to be a keyboard player.

8. I'd commision Tony Banks to form his own 3 piece band. I always thought that would be interesting.

9. I'd pay Rick Wakeman a huge sum to come out publicly and state to his many fans that although he appreciates the fact that they think he is THEE keyboard god....Keith Emerson blows him away in every aspect.

Well, at least it wasn't an ELP thread!!!

A bit obvious but I would organise a Gentle Giant reunion. Make them an offer they simply can not refuse. Big%20smile

I'd hire Hampden and set up 'Progfest' over a summers weekend:

Day one (Fri.): Kamelot, Symphony X, Dream Theater, Rush, Pink Floyd
Day two(Sat.): Fates Warning, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Peter Gabriel, Yes
Day three (Sun.): Twelfth Night, Camel, Steve Hillage, Marillion, Genesis

I think I would:
1.  Upgrade my home stereo.
2.  open a bar dedicated exclusively to prog. (There are already a couple but one extra won't go amiss!)
3.  Open a record store
4.  Own my own record label and release all those rare gems that I have been trying to get hold of and are in desperate need of re-release.

We've been here before: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=38448 Wink
and my answer is the same:

I'd start a record label & studio and record thousands of unsigned bands. There would be no star status, no unfair or binding contracts, no hidden management fees, no studio costs, no advances, no wages and no unlimited studio time - just the facilities to record, manufacture and distribute one album per band. There would be a limited amount of general promotion, (maybe a few well promoted tours and festivals and a series of targeted genre-specific promo CDs), but the bands would have to do all the specific promotion themselves, either individually or as small collectives within the label (anyone who can remember the Manchester Musicians Collective of the 80s will know how effective that can be)

Think of it as the opportunity to record a professional demo for free with added benfits of sound business and studio management. All start-up bands need that step-up to the next level and often it is just a small amount of cash and the knowledge to spend it wisely that prevents that from happening.

I have calculated that $5,000 for each band would produce a vialble "product" for them to sell and the sales of those would then be used to fund futher pressings and/or the second album. If any band or artist thinks that $5,000 is not enough then they are free to add to the pot with their own funds, if they are still not happy with that then they are not the kind of band I would be looking to help and they can go look for another label.

This would be a 100% non-profit making altruistic enterprise and all I would ask in return is for any band who made it big to remember where they came from and feed the system, so helping other struggling bands that follow them.

What?
