I Think P.Tree is far more progressive and interesting to listen to so they get my vote.
Dream Theater was at it's best in liquid tension experiment i think ( without labrie & myung )

As great as PT is on disc, live they're not so good... I was there this wednesday in Orlando... they don't put the great performance that other lesser bands put...no solos, no interaction, Wilson makes mistakes (he forgot the lyrics of Blackest Eyes) and too many unknown songs..... That fact alone makes my (already made) decision even a stronger one : DT! |
Really? Maybe you just caught them on a bad day? I saw them last week and some of the songs were worse live (My Ashes wasn't that great live and they played Dark Matter which wasn't that great live) but most of them were much, MUCH better, I found. Their final song was Halo and that was so much better than the studio version that there's no comparison.
Maybe they're just one of these bands that are sometimes good and sometimes bad live?

Progressive rock ? Porcupine Tree.
Progressive Metal? Dream Theater.
Better Musicians? Dream Theater.
Better compositions? Porcupine Tree/Dream Thaeter.
Better band overall Porcupine Tree/ Dream Theater..
I am a big fan of both bands and I had follow them both for more than 10 years now. I liked PT since the first time I head Signify and then Sky moves side ways back in the 90's because of their Biggest Influences Pink Floyd.
However I liked Dream Theater the first time I heard them because the Biggest Influences too RUSH.
so my point is the both are great bands and both are very progressive, but different in their own right. PT makes simpler prog ala Pink Floyd and Dream Theater makes more complex prog music ala YES/ELP.and Indeed they are very progressive and one isn't any less than the other. just like pink Floyd wasn't any less progressive than King crimson or ELP.

Yet another poster who is an ultra-DT loyalist? Look at the score. PT obviously appeals to many more than DT, and for very good reason.

I would have to say Dream Theater, but who is proggiest is a tough, tough argument. I'm close to say their even, but just looking at the basic prog feeling, Dream Theater however is more accessible than Porcupine Tree by feel. I'd say even, but given the choice DT is probably the more proggy, technicality and length and variety of topic wise.

I once was cool, but now I'm cold. Can you please turn up the heat.
