I don't know if the situation in Poland is the same as here (it should be), but Americans are not supposed to be able to look for work while here on a tourist visa or visa waiver programme. Work visas should be applied for while in the US, and they must be sponsored by someone. If you got married to your girlfriend, then you could probably stay and look for work - if you don't. I'm afraid you can't.

Technically, yes, that is true in Poland.  However, I know a few Americans who went there without, found work, came home to get their visa and returned.  Also, I have done some research into the whole work visa thing, and Germany actually allows US citizens to come there and stay up to 90 days to look for work and obtain a work permit and residency visa from within Germany.  My plan was to visit her in Poland for a week or two and then go to Frankfurt or Munich to find work there.   Although I wouldn't be living in the same country as her, it would only be a 2-hour flight to visit, instead of the 16-hour flight I have now.  We could see each other on the weekends at least.  That was my plan anyway.  But she is afraid.  I don't know what our future holds now.  Cry
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I am so sorry to hear that, though I can also understand her. If you didn't find work, you would end up depending on her, and I don't suppose she is a millionaire. Unfortunately, for people in our situation the best thing to do (or even the only) is to get married... In Europe, at least, that would guarantee you the right to stay with her - unlike what happens in the US, which have the nerve to keep married couples separated from months.

I don't know what the situation in Poland may be, but I know it's very hard for a foreigner who doesn't speak Italian to find a job here that doesn't involve risking their life big time. As I said, I can't fault her... I really wish things would work out for you.

Oh, I don't fault her either.  It is a tough situation we find ourselves in and it is hard to determine the right way to approach a solution.  I'm just worried that the distance will become too great an obstacle for us.  And I don't want to lose her.  Unhappy

Doc, since you're both serious about your relationship, you shouldn't worry. A good friend of mine could only see her English boyfriend in person a few times a year for about five years and they had to go through A LOT of annoying legal and non-legal obstacles, but they persisted, and they have been a very happily married couple for some three years now. It'll all work out

I guess that also goes for you, Ghostrider

I also meant to add that they live together now.

Thanks Visitor.  Yes, it can be done and it will probably all work out in the end.  I guess I'm a little afraid that maybe she's not as serious as I am, but that is probably the wrong way to look at it.  She probably wants us together as much as I do, she just wants to do it the responsible way.  LOL
